Search for Halloween crosswords and the suggestions split three ways. Google offers printable, for adults, for kids and puzzle book. Amazon offers for adults, for kids, book and even adult spiral. (It also offers halloween crossword clue, which is someone stuck on a newspaper puzzle, not your customer.)
So there are three products here: a one-page printable, a kids’ crossword book, and a crossword book for adults. They share a theme and a grid generator, but the clues make them completely different. This guide covers how to build each with Puzzle Maker Pro, how to write Halloween clues that work, and how to get each format in front of buyers before 31 October.
What a crossword buyer is paying for
A crossword is three things, and the buyer judges all three:
- A grid where words properly cross. Numbered squares, no stray letters, every word linked to the rest.
- Clues pitched at the reader. This is where most of the value is, and most of the work.
- An answer key that matches. A wrong key on a crossword is worse than no key.
Here’s a small example for ages 7 to 12, built from one Halloween list:

This example was drawn with a short script for this article; the layout and clues aren’t exported from any product. The script checked that every run of letters in the grid is one of the 12 answers.
Building the grid with Criss Cross
Criss Cross is the Puzzle Maker Pro module for this. You type or load a word list, and it builds a numbered grid where the words cross at shared letters. The letter cells stay empty on the puzzle and are filled on the solution. (How criss cross works explains the puzzle rules.)
A few things worth knowing before you start, from our crossword variations guide:
- The grid doesn’t promise your whole list. Placement tries several layouts, keeps the densest one, and drops words that don’t fit. Give it more Halloween words than you need.
- Clues are the real cost. You can write them yourself, switch on the built-in US English dictionary for words it knows, or draft them with the AI Word Assistant and then edit. The assistant needs an internet connection; making puzzles doesn’t.
- Word Fill is a no-clue option. It swaps clues for a word bank grouped by length. That’s a genuine fill-in puzzle, and a good choice for younger kids.
- For a one-page printable, set Clue List Output to In Image. The default, Classic, hands the clue list to the book layout. On a standalone sheet that would leave a grid with no clues on it.
If you want a hidden message, Secret Word Criss Cross adds a strip of letters that spells a bonus answer once the grid is solved. A hidden Halloween word makes a satisfying payoff at the bottom of the page.
A Halloween word list that crosses well
Grids come out better when the list is built for crossing, not just for theme:
- Mix the lengths. A few long anchors (skeleton, cauldron, scarecrow) give the grid a spine. Short words (owl, bat, web, moon) fill the gaps and link the long ones.
- Favor common letters. Words full of E, A, O, R, N and T cross easily. A list heavy in J, Q, X and Z leaves words stranded and dropped.
- Write twice as many words as you need. If a page should hold 10 answers, give the generator 20. You’ll get denser grids, and you won’t lose a favorite word to a bad layout.
- Keep one master list. The same file can feed your word searches and scrambles, so a pack feels like one product. See word lists for puzzle books for how to build and reuse lists.
Writing Halloween clues for kids and for adults
The same word list can feed a kids’ edition and an adult edition. Only the clues change.
| Answer | Kids 7-12 | Adults |
|---|---|---|
| PUMPKIN | Orange fruit carved into a jack-o’-lantern | Cinderella’s coach, before the magic |
| CAULDRON | A witch’s big cooking pot | Macbeth’s witches gathered around one |
| SKELETON | All the bones in a body, together | ___ key: it opens many locks |
| GHOST | A see-through spook that says “boo” | Spirit, or what a date does when they stop texting |
| MOON | It glows full and bright on a spooky night | A blue one is famously rare |
Some rules that keep clues fair:
- Kids: one idea per clue, words they’d say out loud, and the letter count after each clue. Keep answers to words a seven-year-old can spell.
- Adults: wordplay, literature, idioms and trivia are fair game. Keep each clue to a single correct answer.
- Both: no trademarked film titles or character names. Classic sources such as Shakespeare and fairy tales are safer ground.
A kids’ book can also mix in Word Fill pages for the youngest readers, so the book gets harder without new vocabulary. Our guide to the crossword and fill-in family covers how those variations sit together on a shelf, and criss cross vs word star compares crosswords with scramble-style puzzles.

Where the Builder fits
A crossword page is all words. That’s perfect for readers aged seven and up, and a bit much for younger siblings or for a pack that needs to look friendly at a glance.
That’s where Halloween Activity Book Builder (affiliate link) is useful alongside Puzzle Maker Pro. It doesn’t make crosswords. It’s the quick route to simple, illustrated activities: mazes, counting, matching, tracing and coloring pages with 116 included Halloween art assets, 6 cover templates and answer keys, exported as printable PDFs and KDP files. It sold on WarriorPlus from 7 October 2026 (16:00 CEST) at a $17 introductory price.
Two ways to combine them:
- An Etsy “Halloween puzzle pack”: a few illustrated Builder pages up front so the preview looks inviting, then your crosswords and word searches, then the keys.
- A family activity book: picture pages for ages 4 to 8, crosswords for 7 to 12. The Halloween activity book for kids guide lays out that two-section plan.
I haven’t bought the Builder. My Halloween Activity Book Builder review covers what’s included, every upgrade price and the 30-day refund policy, all from the vendor’s own pages.

Publish for this Halloween: the real timeline
Halloween is on 31 October. That’s the only deadline here, and both formats can still meet it if you move now.
Printables go live almost immediately. A one-page crossword with a key is a digital download, and an Etsy or TPT listing is typically live as soon as you publish it. Check the clues and the key, list a small printable pack first, and you’re selling this week.
A crossword book should go up this week. Clue writing is the slow part, so keep the first book tight: 30 puzzles from one well-tested word list beats 100 rushed ones. KDP estimates that a submitted book takes 3 business days to go live, and that a paperback’s detail page appears on Amazon.com within up to 72 hours (KDP Help: Timelines). Those are estimates, not promises, so every day you submit earlier is another selling day. Test a few clues on a real solver, check the files in KDP Previewer, and order a printed proof the day you upload.
A checklist for Halloween crosswords
- Every clue has exactly one answer, and it matches the key.
- Kids’ editions show the letter count after each clue.
- One-page printables have the clue list on the page.
- The book’s keys are at the back, numbered to match the puzzles.
- No trademarked film titles or character names.
- The edition is clear in the title: kids, adults, or large print.
If your readers prefer to hunt rather than solve clues, the Halloween word search book for adults uses the same list for large-print and hard word searches. Teachers can turn the kids’ clues into a Halloween class-party packet for TPT.
FAQ
How many words should a kids’ Halloween crossword have?
For ages 7 to 12, 8 to 12 words on a page is comfortable, with short answers and simple clues. Feed the generator a few extra words, because it drops any it can’t fit.
Do I have to write every clue myself?
No. Criss Cross can fill clues from its built-in US English dictionary, or the AI Word Assistant can draft them for you to edit. Writing your own still gives you the best clues, especially for adults.
What’s the difference between a crossword and a criss-cross?
Both have words crossing in a grid. People often use “criss-cross” for puzzles where you fit given words, and “crossword” for puzzles with clues. Criss Cross can do either: clues, or a Word Fill bank.
Can I sell Halloween crosswords on Etsy and TPT?
Every paid edition of Puzzle Maker Pro lets you sell the finished puzzles you make. Check each marketplace’s own rules, and avoid trademarked names in clues and titles.
Can I still publish a Halloween crossword book for this Halloween?
Yes, if you keep it focused and start now. List a printable pack first, since it’s typically live as soon as you publish it. KDP estimates about 3 business days for a submitted paperback to go live, so upload a 30-puzzle book this week.
Start with your word list
Write 30 Halloween words, generate a grid in Criss Cross, and write the clues for the reader you have in mind. If your pack or book needs friendly illustrated pages too, the Builder costs $17 at launch with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
