Type “halloween activity book for kids” into Amazon’s search box and the suggestions fill up with ages: 4-8, 7-12, 3-5, 8-12. Parents and grandparents don’t shop for “an activity book”. They shop for a seven-year-old who finishes everything in ten minutes, or a four-year-old who can’t read yet.
That’s the whole design brief. A good Halloween activity book picks an age band and gives that child pages they can actually do. The best ones often cover two bands: simple, picture-led pages for little ones and real puzzles for the older sibling. This guide shows how to plan that book, which tools build each half, and how to get it in front of buyers before 31 October.
Two age bands, two kinds of page
Kids at four and kids at ten want different things from the same theme.
- Ages 4 to 8 need pictures first. Mazes with a friendly character at the end, pumpkins to count, shadows to match, paths to trace, a page to color. Little or no reading. Big, clear art.
- Ages 7 to 12 want something to solve. Word searches with longer words, criss-cross puzzles with clues, scrambles, hidden-symbol hunts. They read, they like a challenge, and they check the answer key.
The bands overlap on purpose. A seven-year-old might enjoy both sections, and that overlap is what makes a two-section book feel generous instead of padded.
You have two ways to sell this:
- One book, two sections. Picture pages up front, puzzles at the back, answer keys last. Good for families with kids of different ages, and for gift buyers who aren’t sure what level a child is at.
- Two books, one per band. A “4-8” title and a “7-12” title with matching covers. Each listing answers one search directly.

The 4-8 section: fast, illustrated pages
This is the half that eats time when you build it by hand. You need art you’re allowed to use, then you have to turn that art into activities, then make the answer pages and a cover.
Halloween Activity Book Builder (affiliate link) is built for exactly this half. It’s a browser-based tool from Thien Nhan, sold on WarriorPlus from 7 October 2026 (16:00 CEST) at a $17 introductory price. According to its sales page, it includes:
- 12 activity families with 3 layouts each. The sample pages show simple mazes, counting, picture and shadow matching, tracing paths, complete-the-pattern, low-ink coloring, story sequencing, cut and build, and a few gentle “make and give” pages.
- 116 Halloween art assets: 72 character poses (black cats, friendly ghosts, owls, bats, pumpkins), 24 props, 8 scenes and 12 motifs, plus room for your own PNG or SVG art.
- 6 cover templates, color or low-ink interiors, and US Letter, 8 × 10 or A4 pages.
- Answer keys for the activities that need them.
- Exports as a printable PDF, plus separate KDP interior and full-wrap cover PDFs, and a seller ZIP with listing images and description drafts for Etsy and TPT.
I haven’t bought it, so I can’t show you pages of my own. You can flip through 20 sample interior pages on the sales page, and that’s the right test: if the art style suits your buyers, it’ll save you most of the work on this section. My full Halloween Activity Book Builder review covers the upgrades, the refund policy and what the vendor doesn’t promise.
One practical note for print: a cut-and-build page in a bound book ruins whatever is printed on its back. Back it with a blank page, or keep cut-out pages for the printable version.
The 7-12 section: real puzzles from your own word list
The Builder’s activity list doesn’t include word searches, crosswords or word scrambles. That’s not a flaw. It’s a different job, and it’s the job Puzzle Maker Pro was built for. It’s Windows desktop software that generates puzzles from your own lists and settings, with matching solutions.
For the older section, these modules fit a Halloween book:
- Standard Word Search. Paste a Halloween word list, set the grid size, and choose the directions. For younger readers keep words across and down only. The module also has a Kid’s Diagonal setting that allows diagonals in the natural reading direction only, so you can add a step up without backwards words. Every puzzle gets a matching solution.
- Criss Cross. Builds a numbered crossing grid from your list, with Across and Down clues you write, and prints the filled solution. The Halloween crossword guide goes deeper on clue writing for this age.
- Word Scramble. Scrambles your list and reveals hint letters in proportion to word length, with an answer key.
- Seek and Find. Hidden-symbol hunts where you control density and difficulty.
- Puzzle Book Studio assembles the puzzle pages into a section with numbering and a solutions section.
The trick that makes the back section feel like one book is a single word list. Write 40 or 50 Halloween words once (pumpkin, lantern, cauldron, costume, skeleton) and let all three word puzzles draw from it. Then make the difficulty climb by changing the settings, not the theme:

These example grids were drawn with a short script for this article. They show the kind of difficulty step you’d set up, not either product’s exact styling.
A simple ladder for the 7-12 section:
| Pages | Puzzle | Settings to change |
|---|---|---|
| First few | Word search | Small grid, short words, across and down only |
| Middle | Word search, word scramble | Bigger grid, Kid’s Diagonal on, a scramble with generous hint letters |
| Last | Criss-cross, seek and find, word scramble | Written clues, denser symbol hunts, fewer scramble hints |
If you want more on balancing page types for one age band, kids activity book interiors for KDP covers the general rules. This page is the Halloween version with a two-tool split.
Why the two tools work together
The Builder is the quick route to simple, illustrated activities. Puzzle Maker Pro is the deep, flexible puzzle generator. Neither tries to be the other.
| Halloween Activity Book Builder | Puzzle Maker Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Ages 4-8 picture pages | Ages 7-12 word and logic puzzles |
| Art | Included Halloween library | Your list, your settings |
| Strength | Speed and ready-made graphics | Difficulty control and variety |
| Runs | In a browser | On Windows |
Put together, they give you a book a family with two kids can share, and that’s a stronger listing than either half alone.

Publish for this Halloween: the real timeline
Halloween is on 31 October, and an activity book is worth far more to a parent before it than after. That’s the only deadline here, and it’s a real one. Here’s how fast each channel moves once your pages are ready:
Etsy and TPT printables go live almost immediately. A printable PDF is a digital download, and a listing is typically live as soon as you publish it. The Builder’s seller ZIP already includes listing images and description drafts for Etsy and TPT, so the listing isn’t a separate project. This is the fastest route, so list the printable first.
A KDP paperback can make it too, if you submit this week. KDP estimates that a submitted book takes 3 business days to go live, and that a paperback’s detail page appears on Amazon.com within up to 72 hours (KDP Help: Timelines). Those are KDP’s estimates, not promises, and every day you submit earlier is another selling day before the 31st. The Builder exports a separate KDP interior PDF and a full-wrap cover PDF, so there’s no reformatting step. Check both in KDP Previewer before you submit; the vendor also recommends a printed proof, so order one the same day you upload.
One book per band beats a stack of near-copies. KDP lets you create up to 2 new titles per book format each week (KDP Help: Create a Book). That’s plenty for a “4-8” and a “7-12” title. It isn’t room for twenty versions with swapped covers, and buyers can tell the difference anyway.
A quick checklist before you publish
- Each section matches the age on the cover. No backwards words in a “4-8” book.
- Every answer key is checked against its page.
- Low-ink interiors if you’re selling printables people will print at home.
- Cut-out pages backed by blanks in the print version.
- Page size is consistent. The Builder offers US Letter, 8 × 10 and A4, and Puzzle Book Studio can match your trim.
- The cover is yours, not the sample cover.
If the older child in your family is really an adult, the Halloween word search book for adults covers large print and harder grids. And if you’re a teacher, the Halloween class-party packet for TPT turns the same idea into a preK-2 classroom packet.
FAQ
What should a Halloween activity book for kids ages 4-8 include?
Picture-led pages that need little reading: simple mazes, counting, matching, tracing, patterns and coloring, plus answer keys a parent can check.
What about ages 7-12?
Puzzles that take longer and involve reading: word searches with diagonal words, criss-cross puzzles with clues, word scrambles and hidden-symbol hunts.
Can one book cover both age bands?
Yes. Put the simpler illustrated pages first and the word puzzles at the back, then say clearly on the cover and in the description which pages suit which ages.
Can I still publish a Halloween activity book in time for this Halloween?
Yes, if you move now. An Etsy or TPT printable is typically live as soon as you publish the listing. KDP estimates about 3 business days for a submitted paperback to go live, so list the printable first and upload the paperback this week.
Do I need both tools?
No. The Builder alone makes a complete picture-led book for younger kids. Puzzle Maker Pro alone makes the puzzle section. Together they cover both bands.
