A Box Code worksheet page with a numeric coordinate legend and encoded words beside its matching answer key page, rendered from Puzzle Maker Pro, no software UI

Box Code Polybius Printable

Box Code is a coordinate cipher. You lay the alphabet in a small grid, label the rows and columns with numbers or letters, and write each word as a string of coordinate pairs. The solver looks up each pair in the legend, writes the letter in the answer boxes, and reads the decoded word at the end. It is not a quote cryptogram and it is not a word search. The page looks like a grid, a key table, and a row of pairs, which is why it sells as its own printable on Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers.

Box Code is the Puzzle Maker Pro module that builds those pages from your own word lists, renders a matching solution sheet for every puzzle, and scales from a single warm-up phrase to a batch of themed messages. This guide covers how to size the grid, pick message length by age, package answer keys, and ship two concrete packs: a twelve-page spy-themed classroom file and a thirty-page escape-room-style Etsy bundle. Step-by-step generation lives in the Box Code tutorials hub. The sample figures below were rendered from the real Box Code engine, not drawn by hand.

What you are selling on Etsy and TPT

A printable pack is a short PDF, not a paperback interior. Buyers want a theme they can see in the thumbnail, a page count they can trust, and answer keys they can print separately. On TPT the buyer is usually a teacher who needs one decoding skill tomorrow. On Etsy the buyer is often a parent, party host, or small seller who wants a themed activity file with keys included.

Both channels punish the same mistakes. A file that opens on a title page and a table of contents feels like the wrong product. A pack that mixes a kindergarten three-letter page with an adult deduce-the-key puzzle without saying so in the title earns refunds. A listing that shows a color-icon legend in the cover photo but delivers numeric coordinates in page one breaks trust before anyone prints.

The four-channel map explains how a worksheet differs from a KDP interior, a general Etsy printable, and a playable embed. Stay on this page for the coordinate-cipher pack only. If you later bind dozens of Box Code pages into a book, that is a second product with its own trim and Look Inside rules, usually assembled in Puzzle Book Studio or Instant Puzzle Books.

How Box Code is set up in Puzzle Maker Pro

Open Box Code in the Creator. The controls that matter for printables sit on the Settings tab and the word list panel.

  • Phrases per puzzle (PolybiusBox.PhraseCount) runs from 1 to 5. One phrase per page is the usual worksheet shape. Five phrases on one page is a longer sit-down sheet, which suits homework packets more than a single bell-ringer.
  • Legend rows and columns (Puzzle.Legend.Rows, Puzzle.Legend.Columns) accept 3 to 12 each. The defaults are 5 rows and 6 columns, which holds all 26 letters with room to spare.
  • Alphabet (PolybiusBox.Alphabet) is the letter string that fills the grid left to right, top to bottom. Edit it when you want a classic 5×5 square with I and J sharing one cell: use 25 letters and omit J, for example ABCDEFGHIKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. The generator maps only letters that appear in that string.
  • Randomize alphabet shuffles the legend letters for each puzzle while your word list stays the same. That gives you fresh keys without rewriting the list.
  • Display encoding controls whether the legend table prints filled or blank. Leave it on for a standard decode page. Turn it off for deduce-the-key, where the solver reconstructs the legend before decoding the pairs. Name that variant in the title; do not hide it inside a mixed pack.
  • Legend position (Layout.Position) can be Bottom, Top, Left, or Right. Bottom is the default classroom layout. Left or Right can save vertical space when a phrase runs long.
  • Coordinate style on the Settings tab chooses what appears on the axis labels and in the pair string: Numbers (default), Letters, Color shapes, or Images. Color shapes and images need Box Code Creative or Box Code Productivity. Pick one style per listing, because a numeric thumbnail and an icon legend are different products.
  • Quantity sets how many puzzles one run produces from your word list. With one phrase per puzzle, twelve words in the list gives twelve pages when you set Quantity to 12.

Package the exported pages through Instant Puzzle Books, which every edition includes. Set Book Layout to US Letter (8.5×11), keep margins at 0.5 inch or wider, place one puzzle per page (1×1 puzzle grid), and choose Puzzles first, then solutions so student pages stay clean. The answer keys article explains key density; the section below applies that idea to short packs.

Grid size: 5×5, 5×6, and when to merge letters

The historical Polybius square is 5×5 with 25 cells, so I and J share one box. Box Code does not force that merge. You choose the grid size and the alphabet string.

LayoutLegend sizeAlphabetTypical use
Classic square5×525 letters, J omitted or merged with IUpper elementary, intro cipher units
Default rectangle5×6Full A–ZMost classroom packs and Etsy themes
Larger key6×6 or 6×5A–Z plus punctuation, or a longer custom setThemed keys with symbols, shorter words only

A 5×5 page is easier to read on a copier because the cells are larger. A 5×6 page avoids explaining merged letters to parents who expect every letter to have its own box. Either choice is fine if the listing says which one you used.

Keep row and column labels consistent. In Numbers mode the axes use the coordinate labels from your content settings; the sample pages use 1–5 on a 5×5 board. In Letters mode the axes can show A–E instead. Do not switch label styles mid-pack without saying so.

Message length and difficulty by age

Difficulty on this puzzle is mostly word length, grid size, and whether the legend prints filled. Randomizing the alphabet adds work without changing reading level. Deduce-the-key adds a full second step.

Age bandWords per pageLetters per wordLegendOther settings
K–213–55×5, numbers, encoding onOne phrase only; large default fonts
3–51–24–75×5 or 5×6Keep Display encoding on unless the title says otherwise
6–81–35–95×6Try Randomize alphabet for variety within one list
9–121–56–125×6 or 6×6Deduce-the-key as its own file or final section
Adult / party1 phrase8–15+AnyDeduce-the-key, image legends (Creative+), or randomized keys

Box Code skips characters that are not letters when encoding, so hyphens and apostrophes in your source text disappear from the pair string. Spell words without punctuation in the list, or accept that “DONT” and “DONTS” are cleaner classroom entries than contractions.

The generator also respects your phrase list order. Paste one word or short phrase per line. If a line is too long for the fixed puzzle area, turn Automatic grid size on (Puzzle.Grid.AutomaticSize, the default) so the layout grows with the phrase.

Answer keys buyers can trust

On a cipher page the decoded message exists only on the solution sheet. A pack without complete keys is unusable, not merely unfinished.

Box Code renders two scopes for every puzzle: the worksheet (pairs and empty answer boxes) and the solution (answer letters filled in). In Instant Puzzle Books, set Puzzles first, then solutions and give solutions their own layout grid. A 2×3 solution grid prints six keys per page; a 2×2 grid prints four. For twelve puzzles, six keys per page yields two key pages; four per page yields three.

Label keys so they match the puzzle order. Use the title template with the puzzle number token on both puzzle and solution pages, or a fixed prefix such as Answer Key # on the solution side only. Teachers often print student pages and key pages separately; numbering mismatches show up in reviews faster than typos in the word list.

Turn Show page cross-references off for a printable pack. A line that says a solution lives on page forty-seven helps a book buyer and confuses a teacher who printed page three alone.

If you sell on TPT, state that the download includes answer keys. If you sell on Etsy, say whether personal home printing is included and whether classroom use needs a separate licence line you write in the listing. TPT’s default resource licence covers one teacher’s classroom; extra colleagues need their own licences unless your listing adds written terms on top. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.

Worked example A: twelve-page spy classroom pack (TPT)

Listing promise: “Grades 3–5 spy code sheets, one secret word per page, numeric key, answer keys included.”

Word list (12 lines, one word each, 5–7 letters): AGENT, CIPHER, SECRET, SPY, CODE, MISSION, UNDER, RADIO, SIGNAL, CLASS, HIDDEN, DECODE.

Page count: 12 puzzle pages + 2 solution pages = 14 PDF pages. Upload one PDF; mention 14 pages (12 puzzles + 2 answer key pages) in the description.

Preview: Export pages 1, 2, 6, and 13 (first puzzle, second puzzle, mid-pack puzzle, first key page). That shows difficulty is steady and keys exist without spoiling every word.

Recommendation: Start with this shape for your first TPT Box Code listing. One skill, one phrase, keys at the back, honest grade band in the title.

Worked example B: thirty-page Etsy escape-room bundle

Listing promise: “Printable escape room cipher pack, 30 messages, numeric coordinates, keys included, final deduce-the-key challenge.”

Split the file into three sections so buyers know what they are printing.

SectionPagesWordsSettings
Warm-up104–5 letters5×5 legend, encoding on, no randomize
Main clues196–9 letters5×6 legend, Randomize alphabet on
Finale1ESCAPE (6 letters)5×6 legend, Display encoding off (deduce-the-key)

Run three Create passes (or three Time Saver rows on Productivity) and merge the PDFs, or append collections in one Instant Puzzle Book project. Keep the finale in its own subsection with a heading page if you use one; do not bury deduce-the-key on page four without warning.

Word count plan: 29 short-to-medium words plus ESCAPE as the finale. Example warm-up list: DOOR, LOCK, KEY, MAP, NOTE, CLUE, DESK, LAMP, BOOK, SAFE. Main list: nineteen words between six and nine letters tied to your theme (room names, suspect names, or scavenger labels).

Page count: 30 puzzle pages + 5 solution pages at six keys per page = 35 pages total. Round the listing to “30 coded messages plus answer keys” rather than quoting thirty-five; both numbers can appear in the description if you explain that keys add five pages.

Etsy thumbnail: Use page 1 from the warm-up section (filled 5×5 legend, short word). The cover photo must match the first interior page difficulty.

Previews and thumbnails

The first photo sells the grid type. Show a real worksheet page at the size you deliver, not a collage of icons. If the product uses numeric coordinates, the thumbnail must show numbers on the axes. If you sell an image legend, the preview must show images in the key table.

Crop tightly enough that the legend and at least one pair string are readable on a phone screen. Keep contrast high; pale blue axis labels that look elegant on a monitor often disappear on a home printer.

For TPT, a four- or five-page preview PDF built from the finished file is enough: two puzzle pages, one harder page if the pack has levels, and one answer key page. For Etsy, the first listing image should be the same as page one of the download.

When you need flat JPEGs for mockups, export Create Full Page Images from book output settings so each page becomes one image you can crop. Use those renders rather than rebuilding the layout in a design tool.

Quotes, lists, and marketplace rules

You choose every message. Box Code does not supply copyrighted quotes. For classroom packs, prefer vocabulary you would read aloud to the youngest grade named in the title. For Etsy party packs, avoid trademarked character names unless you have permission to sell materials based on them.

Every paid edition of Puzzle Maker Pro includes a licence to sell the finished worksheets and packs you make to your own customers. Box Code Productivity adds the right to sell or supply generated puzzles to other publishers. The details are on the homepage and the editions page. Marketplace rules still apply on top of that licence. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.

Check before you upload

  • Page one matches the title, grid size, and coordinate style named in the listing.
  • Every line in your word list became a puzzle; empty lines do not produce useful pages.
  • Answer keys are complete, numbered, and placed after the puzzle pages (or in a clearly labelled second file).
  • Deduce-the-key pages are named in the title or section header, not smuggled in as a surprise.
  • The PDF is US Letter unless the listing explicitly sells another size.
  • You did not reuse the same twelve words under six different cover photos without new content.

Other puzzles you might like

If your shop already sells quote ciphers, Easy Cryptograms is the substitution-cipher sibling: a line of encoded letters rather than coordinate pairs. Many sellers offer both as separate listings because the thumbnail and the buyer skill differ. The TPT secret code and cryptogram worksheets article compares quote decode and coordinate decode for classroom sellers.

For vocabulary practice without a cipher, Standard Word Search uses the same word lists in a different page shape. Reuse the list, but sell a new skill in a new listing.

The whole point

A Box Code printable is a short, themed pack of coordinate-decode pages with matching keys. Size the legend to your audience, keep phrases honest for the grade band you name, put solutions where teachers and party hosts can print them separately, and split classic decode from deduce-the-key when both appear in your catalog. When you want to test settings on your own words, get the free Puzzle Maker Pro demo. Demo output is watermarked, so use it to judge layout rather than to upload a listing file.
