November arrives fast. A teacher searching for a Thanksgiving word search on Teachers Pay Teachers is usually planning a short literacy block, a gratitude writing warm-up, or a quiet seat before the break—not shopping for a puzzle book. If you sell classroom printables, a small set of differentiated word searches is a straightforward seasonal listing you can ship: one skill, one theme, three grade bands, and an answer key teachers can trust.
This guide walks through building that product in Standard Word Search with Instant Puzzle Books page layout, then packaging it for TPT: print PDF, a digital option, bundling with fall, previews, and pricing that matches a classroom file.
What the buyer is paying for
On TPT the thumbnail and preview must answer three questions at a glance: which skill, which grade band, and whether an answer key is included. A title such as “Thanksgiving word search, grades 3–5, answer key included” answers all three. “Fun November puzzles” answers none.
The buyer is paying for time and fit. They need a page that prints on US Letter, survives a copier, matches the children in the room, and comes with a key they do not have to solve by hand. That follows the same rules as our general TPT word search worksheets guide; Thanksgiving only changes the word list and the listing window.
Three grade bands, three word lists
Split the product by grid size, word count, and direction settings—not by clip art alone. The table below is a practical starting point for Thanksgiving vocabulary. Adjust words to your district’s scope; keep history terms accurate and respectful (for example pair Wampanoag with harvest and alliance, not costume stereotypes).
| Band | Typical grades | Grid | Words per page | Directions | Vocabulary focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A — large print | K–2 | 10×10 | 6–8 | Across and down only | TURKEY, CORN, PIE, FEAST, PARADE, THANKS, LEAVES, GRATEFUL |
| B — elementary | 3–5 | 12×12 | 10–12 | Kid’s Diagonal (↘ only) | HARVEST, PUMPKIN, MAYFLOWER, CRANBERRY, SQUASH, GRATITUDE, AUTUMN, CORNUCOPIA, WAMPANOAG, FEAST, GRAVY |
| C — middle school | 6–8 | 15×15 | 14–18 | Diagonals and backwards | WAMPANOAG, COLONISTS, HARVEST, GRATITUDE, TRADITION, CELEBRATION, CULTIVATION, COMMUNITY, HERITAGE, SUSTENANCE, ALLIANCE, ACKNOWLEDGE, GENEROSITY, REFLECTION |
In Standard Word Search, set Rows and Columns on the Grid tab and direction flags on the Options tab. Kid’s Diagonal limits diagonals to top-left → bottom-right only— a honest step between “across and down” and full diagonal search. Save one preset per band so the next year’s run is one click.

The sample pages above were rendered from the shipping Standard Word Search engine through the same sheet renderer used in production, not drawn by hand.
Respectful history vocabulary
Thanksgiving units in some schools touch Wampanoag communities, harvest, and early colonial contact. Your word list should support that teaching, not replace it. Prefer terms teachers already use in their social studies standards; avoid treating Indigenous peoples as props or past tense only. If a word feels like a costume prompt, leave it out.
Difficulty settings and answer keys
Difficulty on a word search is mostly grid size, word length, and directions—not a separate “hard mode” toggle. Name the band in the title so the preview cannot lie.
Answer keys are half the product for some buyers. For a TPT packet:
- Render with Puzzles First, Then Solutions in Instant Puzzle Books so student pages stay clean and keys sit together at the back (full setup in TPT word search worksheets).
- Give solutions their own shaded grid (Solution tab → light Word Fill on dense grids).
- Number keys to match puzzles (
Answer Key #on the solution title template).
Every puzzle page in the file should have a matching key page in the download—even if you sell a “10 puzzles + keys” packet rather than a single warm-up.

Print PDF plus a digital option
Print path (default). Export a US Letter PDF from Instant Puzzle Books: 8.5×11 inch trim, at least 0.5 inch margins, one puzzle per page, word bank below the grid. That file is what teachers usually print.
Digital path. Some TPT buyers also want to assign the same activity without a copier. When you publish the resource, you can enable the same PDF for Easel Activities so buyers open it on devices (Can I opt out or disable products from Easel Activities?, checked 7 Oct 2026). You still build one master PDF in Puzzle Maker Pro; the marketplace handles assign and student view. That digital layer is the TPT listing—not a second puzzle format from the generator.
A workable Thanksgiving packet
A credible seasonal packet might look like this:
| Section | Pages | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cover + teacher notes | 1–2 | Grade bands, print/digital tips, terms of use |
| Band A puzzles | 4 | Large print, 6–8 words each |
| Band B puzzles | 6 | Kid’s Diagonal |
| Band C puzzles | 4 | Longer vocabulary |
| Answer keys | 3–4 | Six keys per page at 2×3 grid |
| Terms of use | 1 | Individual license reminder |
That is 14 puzzle pages plus cover, teacher notes, answer keys, and a terms-of-use page—about 19–21 pages in the PDF. It is a homework packet shape, not a single bell-ringer. State the count in the listing (“14 puzzles + answer keys, US Letter PDF”).
Batching. Run Create once per band with Quantity set to the page count. To cap the words on each page, turn Unlimited Words off on the Options tab and set Max Words to the top of the band (8, 12, and 18); a page then uses up to that many words from the list you paste. Min Words only matters when Use Words Only Once is on. Turn that on only when you paste a long master list (roughly 24–32 words for Band A, 60–72 for Band B, and 56–72 for Band C at the page counts above); with the short example lists in this article, leave it off so every page can draw from the same seasonal bank. With Productivity, Word Search Time Saver can run all three bands in one table. Add your three saved band presets as preset rows, not regular rows: a regular row carries only Diagonals and Backwards, so Kid’s Diagonal would come from whatever the Creator is set to. A preset row keeps each band’s own direction settings.
Bundle Thanksgiving with fall
Once the Thanksgiving file ships, bundle it with an existing fall vocabulary word search (leaves, harvest, autumn) rather than duplicating the same grid under a new cover. TPT lets you group existing resources into a bundle at a discount; buyers see one checkout for both themes. Keep each resource honest on its own first—bundle only listings that already have previews, keys, and clear grade labels.
A fall-only buyer and a Thanksgiving-only buyer are different search moments; the bundle catches the teacher who wants both without raising the single-file price.
Pricing and fees
TPT classroom files are priced for one usable skill, not page count alone. A differentiated three-band packet can justify more than a one-page warm-up, but only if the preview proves three real levels.
Remember TPT’s per-resource fee on small orders: Basic Seller pays $0.30 on every paid resource; Exclusive Seller pays $0.15 per resource only when the order total is under $3 (Seller Fees and Payout Rates, checked 7 Oct 2026). Pricing at $2.99 to “feel cheap” can eat margin on Basic. Model a $4–$6 single packet or a slightly higher bundle price before you publish.
If you are Basic and also sell on Etsy, TPT requires the same price on every platform where the same file is listed (Guidelines around utilizing other sites, checked 7 Oct 2026). Exclusive Sellers must keep paid digital educational resources on TPT only (off-platform table).
Previews and thumbnails
Build the preview from the finished PDF, not a mock-up:
- One Band A page (large print visible in the crop).
- One Band C page (denser grid).
- One answer key page.
- Optional: teacher notes or cover.
For the store thumbnail, export full-page images from Book Output Settings and crop a single real puzzle page. Teachers compare the thumbnail to what they print.
TPT’s image size rules change; read the current seller help before upload.
Why differentiated levels outsell one page
One 12×12 Thanksgiving grid fits one classroom moment. The teacher with a combined 2/3 room, a split intervention group, or a gifted cluster needs a second difficulty in the same download. A three-band file turns “maybe” into “this works for my whole block” without three separate checkouts.
That is the seasonal TPT advantage over a single page on a general marketplace: teachers search by grade and skill. You are selling fit, not letters in a box.
Check before you upload
- Titles name Thanksgiving, grade band, and answer key.
- Every word in each bank appears in its grid (Stats tab → no surprise drops).
- Keys are numbered, at the back, and printable separately.
- File is US Letter; type is large enough for the youngest band you claim.
- Preview shows at least two difficulty levels plus a key.
- Terms of use page matches TPT’s individual license expectations.
Every paid edition of Puzzle Maker Pro lets you sell the finished worksheets you make to your own customers. Productivity adds the right to sell or supply puzzles to other publishers and unlocks Time Saver batching. See the editions page and commercial rights for the software license; TPT’s buyer license and content rules are separate. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.
