Shoppers who search for a jigsaw printable usually mean a picture they can print, color, and cut—not a boxed photo puzzle that arrives in the mail. Jigsaw Squares builds those pages from your JPG or PNG: one source image per puzzle, plus a board, a pieces sheet, and an assembled solution image on a normal export (Time Saver Pieces Only skips the board file). This guide is for Etsy sellers and Teachers Pay Teachers authors who want a short themed download, not a 120-page KDP interior. Step-by-step Jigsaw Squares settings live under Jigsaw tutorials.
What the listing has to show first
The thumbnail sells the format before anyone reads the description. A glossy landscape that looks like a 1,000-piece box attracts the wrong buyer. Your first image should show printed sheets: the board with square piece lines, the separate pieces page if you sell a cut-out, and the finished picture as the key.
Line art or a simple illustration reads as a classroom color-in. A full-color photo reads as a party craft or gift activity. Either works; the cover and page one must agree. If the title says “farm animals cut-out,” page one cannot be a copy-the-square worksheet with no scissors job.

Cut-out printables
A normal run writes three images: an outline board, a pieces sheet with the photo cut into fragments, and the assembled solution. Time Saver Pieces Only exports the pieces sheet and solution only—no board image. The buyer cuts the pieces sheet and rebuilds the picture on the board (or on a blank surface if you sold Pieces Only). That is the activity Etsy and TPT shoppers expect when they want a printable jigsaw—not a boxed puzzle in the mail.
Choose Triangles or Squares connectors (or curved JigSaw tabs) so scissors can follow edges. Connector Type None drops tabs: square pieces print with a gap between them, controlled by Padding (defaults to 20 pixels, range 0–50; only in None mode). Set Padding to 0 if you want edge-to-edge squares with no interlock. Clues in Puzzle (0–100) pre-fills that many cells on the board with image fragments so younger solvers start with part of the picture already in place; the rest stay empty outlines.
Coloring without a separate “color-in mode.” Line art you supply prints as line art on the fragments. Many teachers have students color the pieces sheet before cutting, or color the assembled solution as a reference page. If you need a single uncut worksheet where the whole picture sits under a grid, set Clues in Puzzle to the full cell count (rows × columns—for example 4×5 = 20 clues) so every board cell prints the image; the grid lines still show where to color. That only works when the grid has 100 cells or fewer, because the Clues control tops out at 100. That is a deliberate setting choice, not a default export.
Do not ship a cut-out pack and a “no scissors” pack in one untitled ZIP. The thumbnail can only sell one job.
Settings that change what prints
Every claim in the listing should map to a control you actually used.
Source image. One file per puzzle. There is no built-in picture library on the create path; you supply the JPG or PNG and must hold rights to use it commercially. Line art you drew is colorable because the art is line art, not because the software has a “color-in mode.”
Grid size. Rows default to 5 and run 1–100. With Perfect Squares on (the default), Columns are derived from your image aspect so cells stay square—a wide photo yields more columns than a portrait. Turn Perfect off only when you want to set both dimensions yourself.
Connectors. Connector Type defaults to Squares, which draws rectangular interlocking tabs (the menu label is not the same thing as square-shaped pieces). None is tab-free: pieces are separated by Padding (default 20 pixels). JigSaw adds curved tabs that look classic but are harder for small hands. The connectors tutorial walks the trade-offs; the listing should name which style the buyer receives.
Quantity. Asking for 10 copies re-cuts the same photo with fresh connector randomization. That builds a “ten versions of one theme” pack, not ten different pictures. For ten distinct animals you need ten source images and ten runs (or a Time Saver batch).
Time Saver and layout. Without the Time Saver add-on, layout stays on Single Page: board, pieces, and solution still export, but the pieces composite beside the board rather than on their own sheet. Time Saver unlocks Double Page (pieces on one page, board on the other) and Pieces Only—the layout teachers expect when the cut-out sheet must stand alone. Time Saver ships with the Jigsaw Time Saver add-on or with a Productivity bundle that includes it; a Squares-only licence is enough for square printables if Single Page layout fits your file.
Outputs. Shipping export is JPG and PNG—typically board, pieces sheet, and solution, or pieces sheet and solution when Pieces Only is selected. Do not promise SVG, Puzzle Slides, or browser play from this desktop module. Other puzzle types sell web play as Creative + Interactive or Productivity + Interactive on their own product pages; Jigsaw Squares does not offer those combined editions—keep this listing to print files only.
Pack size for Etsy and TPT
Etsy sells a file. TPT sells a classroom file. Neither channel wants your entire back catalogue in one download.
A pack that sells is short and themed: roughly 6–12 pictures, one difficulty band (piece count and connector style), one activity (cut-out, color-then-cut, or full-board clues), plus solution images in the ZIP. One theme per file—animals, community helpers, alphabet photos, holiday line art—beats a folder of every image you ever imported.
| Channel | Typical file | What to state in the listing |
|---|---|---|
| Etsy | 6–10 puzzles, one connector style, PDF or PNG ZIP | Piece grid (e.g. 5×7 derived), cut-out or color-then-cut, solutions included |
| TPT | 1–3 worksheets or a 10–15 page packet | US Letter, one activity per student page, separate answer key |
| KDP | Not this article’s job | Bound book with trim and Look Inside—use Puzzle Book Studio or Instant Puzzle Books |
If you later bind thirty puzzles into a paperback, that is a second product with its own trim sample. Do not upload the book PDF as the Etsy or TPT pack.
Triangle, hexagon, and circle piece shapes are separate shape licences on the same Jigsaw engine—different shop listings, not a different puzzle ruleset. This article focuses on square pieces for the printable activity niche.
Worked example 1 — Etsy “Farm cut-out party” (8 puzzles)
Goal. Parents download a birthday craft: eight farm photos, medium difficulty, scissors-friendly tabs.
Settings. Open Jigsaw Squares with Type set to Squares. For each of eight farm photos you own: Rows 6, Perfect Squares off, Columns 8 (a fixed 6×8 grid on every puzzle), Connector Type Triangles, Clues in Puzzle 3, Quantity 1 per image. Export PNGs. With Time Saver, use Double Page so each puzzle’s pieces sheet is its own page; without it, explain in the listing that board and pieces arrive on one sheet and the parent cuts from that layout.
File contents. Eight puzzle folders × (board + pieces + solution) = 24 images, plus a one-page “how to cut” PDF you write in any design or word-processing app. Price as a small themed download, not a workbook.
Listing copy. Title includes “cut-out,” “square photo jigsaw,” and “farm.” First image shows scissors, piece sheet, and solution. State the grid (6×8, 48 pieces) and that these are printable pages, not a mailed puzzle.
Worked example 2 — TPT “Color-then-cut line art” (10 worksheets)
Goal. Grades K–2 color a simple picture, then practice scissor skills on the same page.
Settings. Ten line-art PNGs (your art or licensed clipart). Rows 4, Perfect Squares on (if the art is square, that is a 4×4 grid = 16 cells). Connector Type Triangles, Clues in Puzzle 0 so the board stays outlines-only. With Time Saver, use Double Page so the pieces sheet and the outline board export on separate pages ( Pieces Only skips the board image entirely). Without Time Saver, use Single Page and split the composite in your PDF editor. Show Coordinates off.
File contents. Ten student PDFs built from the pieces pages, plus a teacher key PDF with matching outline boards and solution images. Instructions: “Color, cut, rebuild on the board.”
Listing copy. Say “color, cut, and paste” and show the pieces sheet in the thumbnail—not a boxed jigsaw photo.
Preview checklist before upload
- Page one is a real activity: pieces sheet, board, or full-board clues—whichever job the title promises—visible at thumbnail size.
- Piece count and line weight survive home inkjet or a school copier; pale cut lines fail in the classroom.
- Solution images are in the ZIP and mentioned in the description.
- Image rights are documented for you, not assumed from a web search.
- Cover, title, and first interior page promise the same connector style and the same job.
Rights on Etsy and TPT
Every paid Puzzle Maker Pro edition lets you sell the finished books, worksheets, and packs you make to your own readers and customers on KDP, Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers, or your own store. Selling or supplying the generated puzzles to other publishers and sellers is a further permission that comes with the Productivity edition on the modules that offer it—check the editions page and your Jigsaw Squares product page before you plan a wholesale route. That is platform permission, not a substitute for image copyright or each marketplace’s content rules.
On TPT the buyer starts with TPT’s Individual License—one teacher, their own classroom. Extra colleagues need additional TPT licences. If you want to grant wider classroom or reuse rights, write them as seller-authored terms in your listing; they sit on top of TPT’s licence, not instead of it. On Etsy most buyers expect personal or home use unless you spell out classroom rights. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.
Do not list the same three pictures six times with new covers. Do not use photos, logos, or characters you cannot license for commercial printables.
Editions in one paragraph
Jigsaw Squares is sold per shape licence; unlicensed sessions are demo-only with watermarked Squares. A Squares licence unlocks the full Jigsaw Squares tool for square pieces. Time Saver (batch images and Double Page / Pieces Only layout) comes with the Jigsaw Time Saver add-on or with a bundle that includes it. You can move up to a higher edition after purchase if you later need batch layout or supply rights. Details: Puzzle Maker Pro Editions Explained.

If your buyers want counting on a grid instead of reassembling a photo, read Seek and Find vs Jigsaw Squares—the spot-and-count worksheet uses built-in symbols and does not need a photo library. TPT sellers comparing both looks in one place should open TPT visual puzzle worksheets. If the search was for irregular sudoku regions, not picture cut-outs, see Jigsaw Sudoku instead—similar words in the name, completely different puzzle.
