Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) vs Etsy for Teacher Resources in 2026: Which One Fits Your Products Now?

Last checked: 3 October 2026. TPT is holding a seller Town Hall on 8 October 2026, 7 pm ET; if you are deciding before year-end, watch that session or read TPT’s recap before you lock in a membership tier.

If you sell classroom printables, the question used to be simple: list on Teachers Pay Teachers, list on Etsy, or list on both. On 1 October 2026 TPT replaced Premium Seller with Exclusive Seller, and that choice is no longer automatic. An Exclusive Seller may not sell digital educational resources anywhere except TPT. A Basic Seller may still sell the same digital files on Etsy, your own website, or another shop—but your TPT price must not be higher than on any other platform (Guidelines around utilizing other sites; TPT: “the best price can always be found on TPT”). This guide covers the platform decision after that change: where each product line belongs, what each marketplace expects, and how fees and traffic differ. For page count, preview, license lines, and price logic on the same puzzle asset, use the live TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products article.

What changed on TPT on 1 October 2026

TPT’s seller blog states that Premium Seller is being discontinued and Exclusive Seller is the new paid tier for sellers who want the higher payout and seller tools (Introducing TPT’s Exclusive Seller Membership, 1 October 2026). In plain terms from TPT’s help articles:

  • Exclusive Seller costs $59.95 per year. Payout is 80% for sellers who sign up before 1 January 2027, then 77.5% after that date (Seller Fees and Payout Rates). Transaction fees are $0.15 per resource on orders under $3, matching what Premium charged (seller blog).
  • Exclusive Sellers must sell digital educational resources only on TPT (Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers). They may still promote elsewhere, but paid delivery of those resources has to happen on TPT—for example a “Buy Now” button on your own site that links to the TPT listing (seller blog).
  • Basic Seller is unchanged: 55% payout, $29 one-time fee, $0.30 per-resource fee on paid resources (Seller Fees and Payout Rates).
  • Existing Premium Sellers who want Exclusive on 1 January 2027 must opt in by 31 December 2026, 11:59 pm ET; otherwise they become Basic, with the Basic fee waived and a $5 per remaining month refund of the Premium fee (Exclusive Seller FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers).
  • TPT’s stated reason: resources are “being increasingly sold on sites outside of TPT,” and the change is meant to create “a more unified marketplace” (seller blog).

Confirmed vs still open: TPT’s tables spell out what Exclusive Sellers may sell off-platform (see below). TPT has not published a crisp boundary for every edge case of “digital educational resource,” and enforcement language is general (“penalties may apply,” “we may take action”) (Exclusive Seller FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers). This article does not claim changes to buyer licenses, AI rules, or who owns your IP—none of those showed up in the October 2026 seller-program pages we read.

How the change affects Etsy—and whether you can still use both

Think in membership tier, not in “I have an Etsy shop.”

If you become an Exclusive Seller

You cannot sell digital educational resources on Etsy (or on your own shop as a paid download). TPT’s off-platform table allows physical products, courses/professional development, Boom Cards on the Boom platform, Kindle books, and non-educational digital products such as clip art and fonts (What kinds of products can I sell outside of TPT as an Exclusive Seller?). It does not allow paid digital educational resources, memberships that include them, or licenses for them on other sites (same article).

Practical split some sellers are weighing:

If your Etsy income is mostly classroom worksheets and instant-download activity packs, going Exclusive is effectively choosing TPT over Etsy for that line—not tweaking a few listings.

If you stay a Basic Seller (or drop to Basic)

Basic Sellers may sell the same resources elsewhere, including Etsy and an own website or own shop, but TPT’s Guidelines around utilizing other sites require that the best price can always be found on TPT—your TPT listing price must not be higher than the price on any other platform—plus no advertising outside stores from your TPT listings and no refund games to push buyers off-platform (Guidelines around utilizing other sites). Some sellers discussing the change online say they plan to keep a Basic account or drop to Basic so they can keep a second channel; that is a business trade, not a loophole: you keep channel freedom at 55% on TPT instead of 77.5–80% on Exclusive.

Traffic is the other half of that trade. TPT still brings search traffic from teachers already shopping for standards-aligned resources. Etsy brings a different crowd. An own store brings traffic you drive—email, social, blog—without a marketplace search box. Sellers who worry about a store being shut down or banned without warning often mention wanting an own site as backup; TPT’s October pages do not promise how enforcement will work in every case, which is one reason to treat the 8 October Town Hall as worth watching.

Who buys on each platform

Teachers Pay Teachers buyers are most often classroom teachers (or specialists buying for a grade or standard). They search by skill, grade band, and curriculum language. They want a file they can open tonight, print tomorrow, and grade with a key they trust.

Etsy buyers for printables are often parents, homeschoolers, party hosts, and gift buyers. They respond to theme, cover art, and instant download, not to “5.NF.A.1.” A Thanksgiving word-search pack for the kids’ table fits Etsy better than a single standards-tagged worksheet, even when a teacher might also like it.

That audience gap is why “sell worksheets on Etsy” and “sell on TPT” are not the same job. You can reuse the words and the puzzle data; you should not reuse the same listing file without re-cutting it. The four-channel map explains the product forms; below is how TPT vs Etsy works after exclusivity.

What each platform wants from your product

Same word list shown as a Teachers Pay Teachers worksheet with a clean puzzle grid versus an Etsy pack with three different autumn word searches

TPT: one page plus answer key (often with a digital layer)

The listing is usually one skill on one page: student worksheet, separate answer key, title that names grade and standard. Some sellers also include a digital version for classroom projection, but the buyer still thinks “one activity.” Preview shows the skill and proves a key exists. For word-search worksheet craft, see TPT word search worksheets.

Etsy: themed instant-download pack

The listing is a small themed pack (for example 10 pages): PNG/PDF puzzle pages, keys inside the ZIP, a cover image for the thumbnail, and commercial-use or personal-use language the buyer can see before checkout. Pack mechanics—preview images, ZIP structure, license sentence—are what Selling puzzle printables on Etsy covers. If you also sell from an own website, see sell puzzle printables on your own website for delivery and discovery without a marketplace.

Building a reusable word list library helps you turn one themed list into a worksheet, a pack, or a book without starting over. For assembling pages into a paperback, see turn puzzle printables into a KDP book—that is a printed book, allowed off TPT for Exclusive Sellers when it is a hard-copy workbook on Amazon, per TPT’s FAQ cited above.

Etsy seller fees

Etsy’s fees change over time. Read the Fees & Payments Policy on the day you set a price; this guide does not state Etsy dollar amounts or percentages. To see what Etsy keeps from a $100 sale, work the fee lines Etsy shows that week against your list price (including payment processing).

Traffic

  • TPT concentrates teacher search traffic inside one education marketplace.
  • Etsy concentrates gift and lifestyle search traffic; education is a slice, not the whole store.
  • Your own site has no built-in traffic unless you build it—some sellers point email and social traffic to an own store or own shop—but you keep more control over checkout and delivery (sell puzzle printables on your own website).

Decision table: which products fit which platform

Use TPT’s product-type table as the legal guardrail (off-platform products for Exclusive Sellers). Use the buyer column as the marketing guardrail.

Your productTypical buyerBasic SellerExclusive Seller

When a row feels gray, assume TPT will treat it as digital educational until the Town Hall or help center clarifies—and default to Basic if you are not willing to pull the Etsy copy.

Making both products from one puzzle set (Puzzle Maker Pro)

Puzzle Maker Pro generates the puzzle, answer key, and export formats (worksheet PDF, images, book interiors). It does not choose your TPT membership or decide whether a given PDF counts as a “digital educational resource” under TPT’s October 2026 rules—that is between you and TPT’s terms.

A sensible production path:

  1. Build the puzzle data once—word list, grid, solution—from a module such as Standard Word Search.
  2. Cut a TPT file: one page, word bank placement for a copier, separate key page. Instant Puzzle Books ships with every paid edition and handles page layout for worksheets.
  3. Cut an Etsy pack: themed cover, a small themed pack (for example 10 pages), keys bundled in the ZIP, listing photos that match page one. Puzzle Book Studio starts at Creative for book-style layouts; Productivity adds Time Saver batches and mixed-puzzle books when you are building several packs from one list.
  4. Optional fourth output: Online Play on your site requires Creative + Interactive or Productivity + Interactive on modules that sell those combined editions—separate from a TPT/Etsy printable decision.

Commercial rights to sell the finished puzzles you generate are part of the Puzzle Maker Pro license, as stated on the homepage; the cross-channel story is in puzzle maker with commercial rights. That grant is between you and the software. TPT and Etsy each impose buyer licenses and seller rules on top.

FAQ

Can I still sell the same worksheet on TPT and Etsy?

Basic Seller: yes, if it is the same resource and your TPT price is not higher than on Etsy or any other platform—TPT requires that the best price can always be found on TPT (Guidelines around utilizing other sites). Off-platform prices may be higher; they must not be lower than TPT. Exclusive Seller: no for digital educational resources—paid copies must sell on TPT (off-platform table).

Do I have to close my Etsy shop to go Exclusive?

Only if Etsy is how you sell digital educational resources. You may keep Etsy for allowed product types (physical, non-educational digital, etc.). A shop built around classroom PDF downloads would need to delist or move those files to TPT.

What is the difference between Basic Seller and Exclusive Seller now?

Premium Seller is retired. Basic keeps 55% and multi-channel freedom if you follow the best-price-on-TPT cross-listing rule (Guidelines around utilizing other sites). Exclusive raises payout (80% intro, then 77.5%) but restricts digital educational resources to TPT (Seller Fees and Payout Rates; Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers). Former Premium sellers choose by 31 December 2026 or become Basic automatically (Existing Premium FAQs).

Is Teachers Pay Teachers still worth it after the change?

Worth depends on whether TPT’s traffic and payout tier beat what you earn elsewhere after fees. Exclusive can make sense if TPT is already most of your digital education revenue and you are willing to drop off-platform digital sales. Basic—or drop to Basic—makes sense if Etsy, an own website, or another shop matters as much as TPT. This is a margin and control decision, not a moral verdict on either platform.

Is TPT too saturated?

Saturation is a marketing question, not something TPT’s October policy pages answer. Niche lists, clearer standards language, and separate listings—a worksheet, a pack, a book—still matter; channel choice is separate from whether your theme is crowded.

Are people still making money on TPT?

TPT did not publish seller income data in these October 2026 documents. Treat income claims on social media as anecdotes. Model your own catalog: price, fee tier, and how many units each channel can realistically sell.

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

Only Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy is authoritative. Multiply your list price by the fee lines Etsy shows there, including payment processing, on the day you list.

Where can I sell educational materials besides TPT?

Basic Sellers can use Etsy, an own store, and other teacher marketplaces if the best price can always be found on TPT—your TPT price must not be higher than elsewhere (Guidelines around utilizing other sites). Exclusive Sellers must keep digital educational resources on TPT but may use allowed off-platform channels in TPT’s table (physical, Boom, Kindle, non-educational digital, hard-copy Amazon workbooks, etc.) (off-platform products). For a wider channel map—including your own site and KDP—see TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products and sell puzzle printables on your own website.

What happens if I do nothing before 31 December 2026?

Existing Premium Sellers who do not opt into Exclusive become Basic on 1 January 2027, with the Basic signup fee waived and a pro-rated Premium refund of $5 per remaining month (Existing Premium FAQs).

The whole point

Teachers Pay Teachers vs Etsy in 2026 is really Exclusive vs Basic plus what you are selling. Classroom worksheets and digital activity files belong on TPT—exclusively if you take the new tier. Themed instant-download packs belong on Etsy when your buyer is not searching by standard. You can still build both from the same puzzle project if you respect TPT’s rules and export different files.
