Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) Alternatives in 2026: Where to Sell Your Teaching Resources After the Exclusive Seller Change

Last checked: 3 October 2026. TPT is holding a seller Town Hall on 8 October 2026, 7 pm ET; this guide will be updated after that session if TPT clarifies open questions.

If you sell classroom printables or puzzle worksheets, you have probably seen the October 2026 Teachers Pay Teachers seller announcement. The practical questions are straightforward: where else can I sell, what does each marketplace want from my files, and do I have to pick one platform?

Puzzle Maker Pro can build puzzles, answer keys, and print-ready exports for several channels, but TPT’s membership terms decide whether a digital educational resource may be sold elsewhere. Your generator license and your marketplace agreement are two different documents.

What changed on 1 October 2026

On 1 October 2026, TPT retired new Premium Seller sign-ups and introduced Exclusive Seller, as described in TPT’s seller blog post. TPT’s stated reason: “TPT resources are being increasingly sold on sites outside of TPT. This update helps us create a more unified marketplace.”

Here is what TPT has confirmed as of this writing:

  • Exclusive Seller costs $59.95 per year. Payout is 80% for sellers who join before 1 January 2027, then 77.5% from 1 January 2027 onward, with a $0.15 per-resource fee on orders under $3 (TPT describes this as unchanged from Premium Seller transaction fees). Exclusive Sellers must sell digital educational resources only on TPT and may not sell off-TPT memberships or licenses for those resources (Seller Fees and Payout Rates, Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers).
  • Basic Seller is unchanged: $29 one-time, 55% payout, and $0.30 per resource (Seller Fees and Payout Rates).
  • Existing Premium Sellers who want Exclusive status on 1 January 2027 must opt in by 31 December 2026, 11:59 pm ET. If they do nothing, they become Basic on 1 January 2027; TPT waives the $29 Basic fee and refunds $5 per remaining Premium month with the January payout (Exclusive Seller FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers).
  • Leaving Exclusive for Basic requires a one-year wait before you can rejoin Exclusive, and the annual fee is not refunded (seller blog).
  • All stores tied to one seller must use the same membership type (Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers).

TPT has not announced changes to buyer license terms, AI content rules, or your ownership of your work in these pages. What remains unclear is how TPT will draw the line on “digital educational resources” in edge cases, and what enforcement will look like when TPT says violations “may take action” or that “penalties may apply” (Exclusive Seller FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers). Treat those as open questions until the Town Hall or updated help articles land.

Decide your path: Exclusive, Basic plus other platforms, or mostly off TPT

You are not choosing a marketplace list first. You are choosing how much of your catalog must live only on TPT.

PathWhat you keepWhat you give up or accept
Exclusive SellerHigher TPT payout (80% through 2026, then 77.5%), Premium seller tools, and a chance to appear in TPT-funded marketing campaigns (seller blog)Paid digital educational resources sold only on TPT; exclusivity starts immediately if you sign up as Basic or new (Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers)
Basic plus other platformsSame resources on Etsy, Payhip, Gumroad, Shopify, or your own website / own store, with TPT’s built-in traffic as one channel among several55% TPT payout and $0.30 per resource; when you cross-list, your TPT price cannot be higher than on other platforms — the best price must be on TPT (Guidelines around utilizing other sites)
Mostly off TPTFull control of your own shop, email list, and pricing on non-TPT channelsYou rebuild traffic yourself; some sellers worry about accounts being banned or a store closed without warning — a risk on any platform, which is why diversification matters

Some sellers say they plan to drop to Basic or keep a Basic account so they can keep an Etsy shop or own site alive. Others lean Exclusive because TPT still brings buyers. Neither camp has a universal answer; your split between TPT sales and everywhere else decides the math.

Alternatives by type: marketplaces, Etsy, storefronts, KDP, Boom Learning

Fees change. The numbers below were taken from each platform’s own pricing or policy pages on 3 October 2026. Taxes and currency conversion can apply on any channel. Payment processing stacks differently by platform: Payhip adds Stripe or PayPal fees on top of its Payhip plan fee; Etsy and Shopify include their own processing rates in the bullets below; Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 on profile and direct-link sales plus card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees (its 30% Discover fee includes processing).

Teachers Pay Teachers (your baseline)

You already know this channel: teachers search for a skill, buy a file, print or assign it. Membership fees and payout rates are on TPT’s Seller Fees and Payout Rates page.

Other teacher marketplaces (Tes, Classful, and similar)

Tes, Classful, Made By Teachers, and Teacha! are the closest teacher marketplaces to Teachers Pay Teachers: teacher buyers, curriculum-style listings, and smaller traffic than TPT. Each sets its own commission and upload rules on its seller pages. Treat them as experiments with their own product requirements, not as drop-in copies of your TPT store. Some sellers say they are exploring Classful or similar marketplaces while they keep a Basic account on TPT.

Etsy (instant-download packs)

Etsy buyers are often parents, homeschoolers, or gift shoppers as well as teachers. Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy and sell page describe, among other charges, a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total (including shipping and gift wrap where applicable), and Etsy Payments processing (for US sellers, 3% + $0.25 per order is the figure Etsy publishes on its sell page). Offsite Ads are optional only while your shop stays below $10,000 in Etsy sales in the past 365 days; below that threshold, attributed orders pay 15% when you opt in. Once you reach $10,000, participation becomes mandatory at 12% on attributed orders for the lifetime of the shop, even if sales later fall below the threshold (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, Etsy Help — fees).

Storefronts: Payhip, Gumroad, Shopify, your own website

A Payhip, Gumroad, or Shopify storefront — or WooCommerce on your own domain — is a strong option when you already have traffic from email, social, or a blog.

  • Payhip (pricing): Free plan with 5% Payhip fee per sale; Plus at $29/month with 2%; Pro at $99/month with no Payhip transaction fee. PayPal and Stripe still charge their own processing fees.
  • Gumroad (pricing, fees): 10% + $0.50 on sales through your profile or direct links, plus credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees; 30% on Gumroad Discover sales (includes processing).
  • Shopify (pricing): Basic is $39/month (or $29/month on annual billing). Card rates for online sales are published on Shopify’s pricing page (US Basic online rate 2.9% + 30¢ at time of check). You own the customer relationship; you also own discovery and sales-tax setup.

The sell puzzle printables on your own website guide walks through what changes when the marketplace is gone but the ZIP file is the same.

Amazon KDP (printed workbooks)

For printed puzzle books, Amazon KDP is still on the table even for Exclusive Sellers. TPT states that you may continue to sell hard-copy educational workbooks on Amazon as an Exclusive Seller (Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers). That is separate from selling the same PDF on Etsy. KDP royalties depend on trim size, page count, and print cost; see KDP paperback royalty and paperback printing cost when you price a book.

Boom Learning

TPT’s exclusivity table explicitly allows Boom Cards on the Boom Learning platform (What kinds of products can I sell outside of TPT as an Exclusive Seller?). Boom is a different kind of product — interactive decks, not a PDF — with its own seller fees on Boom’s site. Puzzle Maker Pro does not replace Boom’s authoring environment; it is listed here because sellers keep asking whether Boom counts as “elsewhere.”

What each platform wants from your product

Buyers on each shop expect something different from the same puzzle data. The TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products article is the deep comparison; here is the seller shorthand.

Typographic comparison at 1200 by 630 pixels with three equal columns labeled TPT, Etsy, and KDP, each with bold Format, Buyer gets, and File or Print step labels and wrapped body text, no product photos

  • TPT: One classroom page plus answer key, often built from a unit vocabulary list, frequently with a digital version teachers can assign. One skill, one listing.
  • Etsy: A themed instant-download pack — PNG or PDF pages plus keys in a ZIP, listing photos that read at thumbnail size, and a clear personal-use or commercial-use sentence in the description. See selling puzzle printables on Etsy for how to build a pack.
  • Your own website / own shop: The same pack as Etsy, but you write the product page, delivery, and license line; no built-in teacher search.
  • KDP: A full book of puzzles with a trim size, front matter, and a proper answer section — not a worksheet blown up to book length. Turn puzzle printables into a KDP book covers assembly.

Cut the asset for the shop, then price it for that shop.

Staying Basic: the TPT price rule

If you stay Basic and list the same digital educational resource on TPT and elsewhere, TPT’s Guidelines around utilizing other sites require that:

  • You not list the same resource at a higher price on TPT than elsewhere — “the best price can always be found on TPT.”
  • You not link to or advertise outside stores from your TPT listings.
  • You not use refund games meant to push buyers off TPT.

You can still send email or social traffic to your own site; you cannot turn TPT into a billboard for a cheaper Etsy checkout. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.

Going Exclusive: what you can still sell elsewhere

TPT publishes a table of what Exclusive Sellers may sell off-platform (seller blog, off-TPT products help). In plain language:

Allowed elsewhere (per TPT)Not allowed elsewhere (per TPT)
Physical productsPaid digital educational resources
Courses / professional development (per TPT’s off-platform table; a worksheet inside a video course must be tied to that course, per Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers)Memberships or subscriptions that include your digital educational resources
Boom Cards on Boom LearningLicenses for your digital educational resources
Kindle books (as TPT labels them)
Non-educational digital goods (clip art, fonts, etc.)
Hard-copy educational workbooks on Amazon
Free resources (TPT also states you cannot charge on TPT for a resource you give away free elsewhere; see off-TPT products help)

You may still promote on other channels; TPT expects the purchase to happen on TPT when the item is an exclusive digital educational resource — for example a Buy button that links to the TPT listing (Exclusive Seller FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers).

Make once, sell in several places (with Puzzle Maker Pro)

Puzzle Maker Pro generates puzzle pages, answer keys, and print-ready exports (PDF and images, depending on the module). Instant Puzzle Books ships with every paid edition and builds a book PDF from your current settings. Puzzle Book Studio starts at Creative for book-style layouts; Productivity adds Time Saver batch workflows and mixed puzzle books in Studio. Interactive unlocks Online Play on your site only — not a substitute for TPT’s file license. Combined shop editions are written Creative + Interactive and Productivity + Interactive.

That production stack does not override TPT: if you are Exclusive, the digital PDF of a vocabulary word search still belongs on TPT only. You can still use the same puzzle data for an allowed printed workbook on KDP, a Boom deck, or a physical product.

Reuse the hard part — the word list and puzzle settings — across listings, as in thematic word products from one theme. Every paid edition lets you sell the finished books, worksheets, and printable packs you make to your own readers and customers; supplying generated puzzle content to another publisher or seller requires Productivity. Marketplace rules decide where each file may be sold. The full cross-channel rights story lives in puzzle maker with commercial rights.

Checklist before 31 December 2026

If you are a current Premium Seller, TPT’s opt-in deadline is 31 December 2026, 11:59 pm ET (seller blog).

  1. Inventory your catalog — mark each product as digital educational, physical, book, Boom, or other.
  2. Map each product to allowed channels under Exclusive or under Basic cross-listing rules.
  3. Compare membership cost and payout on TPT’s fee page for your realistic order sizes (remember per-resource fees on small orders).
  4. Price check — if you stay Basic, confirm nothing is priced higher on TPT than on Etsy or your own shop.
  5. Rebuild listings where needed (worksheet vs pack vs book) using the platform comparison above.
  6. Register for the 8 Oct Town Hall and note any policy clarifications; we’ll update this guide after the session.
  7. If you go Exclusive, remove paid off-TPT copies of exclusive digital resources; keep allowed channels (print, Boom, etc.) live.

FAQ

Where can I sell educational materials besides Teachers Pay Teachers?

Teacher marketplaces (Tes, Classful, and similar), Etsy for instant downloads, Payhip, Gumroad, Shopify, or your own website, plus printed workbooks on Amazon KDP and Boom Learning for interactive decks. Which channels are open depends on your TPT membership: Exclusive Sellers face tight limits on paid digital educational files (off-TPT products help).

Can I sell the same resource on TPT and Etsy?

Basic Sellers: yes, if your TPT price is not higher than on other platforms and you follow TPT’s cross-listing guidelines (Guidelines around utilizing other sites). Exclusive Sellers: no for paid digital educational resources — those must be sold only on TPT, with no off-TPT paid digital version, even repackaged. Allowed off-TPT formats include a printed KDP workbook, a Boom deck on Boom Learning, or a physical product (off-TPT products help).

Do I have to close my Etsy shop?

No — not the shop itself. If you go Exclusive, you must remove paid digital educational Etsy listings that TPT treats as exclusive-only (or move those sales to TPT). You may keep the Etsy storefront open for permitted products: physical goods, hard-copy workbooks, non-educational digital items, and anything else TPT allows off-platform (off-TPT products help). Some sellers who want paid educational downloads on Etsy say they will keep a Basic account instead.

What happens if I do nothing before 31 December 2026?

Existing Premium sellers who do not opt into Exclusive become Basic on 1 January 2027, with the $29 Basic fee waived and a $5-per-remaining-month Premium refund in the January payout (Exclusive Seller FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers).

What is the difference between TPT Basic Seller and Exclusive Seller now?

Basic: $29 one-time, 55% payout, $0.30 per resource, sell digital educational resources on multiple platforms when your lowest listed price is on TPT. Exclusive: $59.95/year, 77.5% payout from 2027 (80% introductory rate for early joiners), $0.15 per resource on orders under $3, digital educational resources only on TPT (Seller Fees and Payout Rates). Premium Seller is retired for new sign-ups.

Is Teachers Pay Teachers worth it in 2026?

TPT still offers built-in traffic from teachers actively searching for resources — something most own store setups lack on day one. Whether that is worth the payout cut or the exclusivity trade depends on your sales volume and how much you earn off TPT versus Etsy, KDP, or your site. This guide does not rank income; it maps choices.

Is TPT too saturated?

Competition on popular skills is real, but saturation is a marketing question, not a membership-type question. The October 2026 change affects where you may list, not how crowded a search results page looks.

Are people still making money on TPT?

TPT has not published seller earnings data with this announcement. Sellers still list resources there because buyers still shop there; your results depend on niche, quality, and visibility.

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

Etsy’s published fees include a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total and, for US shops using Etsy Payments, 3% + $0.25 processing on that order (Etsy sell page, Fees & Payments Policy). A $0.20 listing fee applies when you create or renew a listing. Offsite Ads fees apply on attributed orders; they are optional only below the $10,000 sales threshold and mandatory at 12% once a shop crosses it (for the shop’s lifetime). On a simple $100 item with free shipping and no ads, the transaction fee is $6.50 and US processing is $3.25 before listing renewal — $9.75 in commonly quoted Etsy fees, plus the listing charge. This is arithmetic from Etsy’s published rates, not a guarantee of your net.
