Last checked: 3 October 2026. Teachers Pay Teachers retired Premium Seller on 1 October 2026 and introduced Exclusive Seller, a paid tier that pays a higher share only if you sell qualifying digital educational resources on TPT alone. Basic Seller is unchanged. This guide helps teacher-sellers who are choosing between TPT exclusive seller membership and keeping a Basic account (or signing up as Basic) while you still sell on your own website, Etsy, or elsewhere. We will update it after TPT’s Town Hall on 8 October 2026 at 7:00 pm ET (seller blog announcement).

Timeline
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 Oct 2026 | New Premium Seller sign-ups end. Exclusive Seller opens. Existing Premium accounts stay at 80% payout through 31 Dec 2026 (Seller Fees and Payout Rates). |
| 8 Oct 2026, 7:00 pm ET | TPT Town Hall on the change (seller blog). Expect clarifications on edge cases; this article will be refreshed afterward. |
| 31 Dec 2026, 11:59 pm ET | Deadline for current Premium Sellers to opt into Exclusive Seller for a 1 Jan 2027 start (FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers). |
| 1 Jan 2027 | Premium Seller membership ends. Sellers who opted in become Exclusive; sellers who did nothing become Basic. Exclusive payout drops from the introductory 80% to 77.5% (seller blog). |
TPT’s stated reason for the change: “TPT resources are being increasingly sold on sites outside of TPT. This update helps us create a more unified marketplace” (Introducing TPT’s Exclusive Seller Membership).
Side-by-side: Exclusive Seller vs Basic Seller
These figures come from TPT’s Seller Fees and Payout Rates page (updated 1 Oct 2026) and the Exclusive Seller FAQs. Payment-processor fees, refunds, and taxes are separate.
| Basic Seller | Exclusive Seller | |
|---|---|---|
| Membership fee | $29 one-time, non-refundable | $59.95 per year |
| Seller payout | 55% of the order | 77.5% from 1 Jan 2027; 80% for sign-ups and opt-ins through 31 Dec 2026 |
| Per-resource fee | $0.30 on every order | $0.15 per resource only when the order total is under $3 (same rule Premium had, per seller blog) |
| Exclusivity | None, but price-consistency rules apply when you sell the same resource elsewhere (Guidelines around utilizing other sites) | Digital educational resources must be sold only on TPT; see the next section |
| Price consistency | Yes — TPT expects the best price on TPT when the same listing exists off-platform (S8) | Exclusivity replaces cross-listing for covered digital products |
| Premium seller tools | No | Yes — Search Analytics, Keyword Finder, and related marketing features (FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers) |
If you are comparing TPT seller fees today, treat Premium Seller as retired: the live choice is Exclusive or Basic, not a third paid tier.
What “exclusive” covers — and what you can still sell off TPT
Exclusive applies to digital educational resources you would sell on TPT. You may not sell those paid files, or memberships or licenses that include them, on your own shop, Etsy, or another marketplace (What kinds of products can I sell outside of TPT as an Exclusive Seller?).
TPT’s own summary:
| Product type | Allowed off TPT as an Exclusive Seller? |
|---|---|
| Digital resources not tied to teaching (e.g. clip art, fonts) | Yes |
| Physical products | Yes |
| Courses / professional development | Yes |
| Boom Cards (on the Boom Learning platform) | Yes |
| Kindle books | Yes |
| Digital educational resources | No |
| Memberships or subscriptions that include your digital educational resources | No |
| Licenses for your digital educational resources | No |
Other rules TPT confirms:
- You may still promote on social media, email, and your own site, but the purchase for covered digital products must happen on TPT — for example a “Buy Now” button that links to your TPT listing (seller blog).
- Free resources may be shared on and off TPT, but you cannot charge on TPT for a resource you give away free elsewhere (FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers).
- Every store you operate must use the same membership type (same FAQ).
If you are a Premium Seller today
You are on the path that ends 31 December 2026:
- Opt in to Exclusive Seller by 31 Dec 2026, 11:59 pm ET to become Exclusive on 1 Jan 2027 (FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers).
- Do nothing and you automatically become Basic on 1 Jan 2027. TPT waives the $29 Basic fee for that conversion and refunds $5 per remaining month of your Premium year with your January payout (seller blog).
- If you leave Exclusive later, you may switch to Basic, but you must wait one year before rejoining Exclusive, and the annual Exclusive fee is not refunded (seller blog).
Some sellers in public forums say they plan to drop to Basic so they can keep a second shop on Etsy or their own website, because TPT still has the traffic while a solo store does not. Others worry about account enforcement — stories about a store closed or suspended with little warning — and do not want every digital dollar tied to one platform. Those are seller opinions, not TPT policy; the confirmed policy is the opt-in deadline and the exclusivity table above.
If you are Basic or new to Teachers Pay Teachers
Basic Seller terms are unchanged: 55% payout, $0.30 per resource, $29 one-time fee (Seller Fees).
If you sign up for Exclusive Seller as a new or Basic seller, exclusivity starts immediately, even though payout stays at 80% until 1 Jan 2027 (FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers). Do not opt in casually “for the tools” if you still sell classroom PDFs on Payhip or Etsy.
Basic sellers who stay off Exclusive must follow TPT’s other-sites guidelines: no advertising outside stores from your TPT listings, consistent pricing so the best deal stays on TPT, and no refund games to push buyers elsewhere (S8).
Worked example (illustrative): $1,000 in TPT sales, 200 resources
This math is illustrative only — a toy model, not your real statement. Swap in your own gross sales, resource count, and how many orders fall under $3.
Assumptions (all four must hold for these exact totals):
- Calendar year 2027, so Exclusive payout is 77.5% (not the 80% introductory rate through 31 Dec 2026).
- $1,000 in gross sales on TPT in that year.
- 200 orders — one resource sold per order (200 resources total).
- No order is under $3.00, so Exclusive $0.15 under-$3 fees do not apply, and Basic pays $0.30 on every one of the 200 orders.
Exclusive Seller
- Seller share: $1,000 × 77.5% = $775.00
- Annual membership: $59.95
- Per-resource fees at $3+: $0 (fee applies only when the order is under $3, per Seller Fees)
- Illustrative net before payment fees and taxes: $775.00 − $59.95 = $715.05
Basic Seller
- Seller share: $1,000 × 55% = $550.00
- Per-resource fees: 200 × $0.30 = $60.00
- Subtotal after TPT’s cut and per-resource fees: $550.00 − $60.00 = $490.00
- If you already paid the $29 one-time Basic fee in an earlier year: illustrative net = $490.00
- If this is your first year as Basic and you pay the $29 fee in 2027: illustrative net = $490.00 − $29.00 = $461.00
Gap vs Exclusive ($715.05): about $225 if you are an established Basic seller ($715.05 − $490.00), or about $254.05 if you are paying the $29 fee in this same year ($715.05 − $461.00). Either way, count income from Etsy, your own store, or a printed workbook on Amazon before you decide Basic wins — and weigh the traffic trade-off of marketing your own shop.
If your catalog includes many under-$3 orders, add Exclusive $0.15 × resource count for those orders only, and compare to Basic’s $0.30 on every order.
Still unclear (pending the Town Hall and TPT updates)
TPT has not published a full penalty schedule. The Existing Premium FAQ says that if a seller breaks the Exclusive agreement, “penalties may apply” (S3). The New/Basic FAQ says TPT “may take action” if requirements are not met (S4).
Open questions sellers are raising (not answered in writing yet):
- Where the line falls for “digital educational resources” — teacher planners, clip art sold to teachers, slightly different file versions on two platforms.
- How Kindle books differ from hard-copy workbooks on Amazon in practice (TPT explicitly allows the latter; see below).
- Whether buyer licenses, AI content rules, or IP ownership changed (we found no announced change to those policies as of 3 Oct 2026; do not treat forum posts as policy).
Watch the 8 Oct 2026 Town Hall and TPT Help Center after it before you reorganize your whole catalog.
Where Puzzle Maker Pro fits
Puzzle Maker Pro builds puzzles, answer keys, and export formats (PDF, images, presentation files, and more). Teachers Pay Teachers’ membership rules decide where a digital classroom file may be sold, not the software. If you are Exclusive, your TPT-priced PDF worksheets stay on TPT; you are not licensing around that by exporting the same paid file elsewhere.
Two channels TPT still allows for Exclusive Sellers matter for puzzle publishers:
- Printed hard-copy educational workbooks on Amazon — TPT states: “You may continue to sell hard-copy educational workbooks on Amazon as an Exclusive Seller.” (FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers)
- Your own website for allowed product types, or for Basic sellers who keep digital rights — see sell puzzle printables on your own website.
Instant Puzzle Books ships with every paid edition and assembles a book PDF from your current settings. Puzzle Book Studio starts at Creative and adds layout control for your book interiors. Productivity adds Time Saver batches and mixed-puzzle books. The Interactive add-on unlocks Online Play only; it does not change where a TPT worksheet PDF may be listed. Editions are written Creative + Interactive and Productivity + Interactive when web play is in scope.
Typical workflow:
- TPT: one worksheet plus key from a vocabulary list (TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products compares worksheet, printable, and book listings).
- Amazon KDP: a full workbook interior — trim, front matter, and a solutions section — allowed off TPT even when Exclusive (turn puzzle printables into a KDP book, number puzzle books for KDP).
- Reuse: one word list feeding several honest products (word lists for puzzle books).
Commercial rights to sell the puzzles you generate are part of the Puzzle Maker Pro license story on the homepage; that is separate from TPT’s buyer license and from Exclusive terms. This is general publishing guidance, not legal advice.
How to decide (quick guide)
| Your situation | Lean Exclusive if… | Lean Basic if… |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly all digital sales already on TPT | The 77.5% share plus tools beats splitting attention | — |
| Meaningful Etsy / own-store revenue for the same PDFs | You will remove those off-TPT listings (or move the product to an allowed format, such as a printed workbook) — exclusivity is not fixed by price alone (S4) | You need those channels and accept 55% on TPT |
| You publish printed puzzle workbooks on KDP | Digital stays on TPT; print is already allowed off-platform (S4) | You also sell the same digital pack on TPT and Etsy |
| You are building traffic to your own shop | You will send buyers to TPT checkout for digital goods | Email and social should point to your store for downloads |
FAQ
What is a Teachers Pay Teachers Exclusive Seller?
An Exclusive Seller pays $59.95 per year, earns 77.5% of each sale from 1 Jan 2027 (80% through 31 Dec 2026 for eligible sign-ups), and agrees to sell covered digital educational resources only on TPT (seller blog, Seller Fees).
What happened to TPT Premium Seller?
Premium Seller was retired for new sign-ups on 1 Oct 2026. Existing Premium accounts remained Premium through 31 Dec 2026, then convert to Exclusive (if you opt in) or Basic (if you do not) on 1 Jan 2027 (membership types).
What are the key differences between Basic Seller and Exclusive Seller now?
Payout (55% vs 77.5% from 2027), fees ($0.30 per resource on every Basic order vs $0.15 only under $3 for Exclusive), annual vs one-time membership cost, and exclusivity on digital educational resources (Seller Fees).
Can I sell the same worksheet on TPT and Etsy?
Exclusive Sellers: not as a paid digital educational resource off TPT. Basic Sellers: yes, if you follow price consistency and the other-sites guidelines (S8).
Can Exclusive Sellers sell printed puzzle books on Amazon?
Yes. TPT allows hard-copy educational workbooks on Amazon for Exclusive Sellers (FAQs for New Sellers and Basic Sellers).
Is Teachers Pay Teachers still worth it in 2026?
TPT still brings traffic teachers already trust; Exclusive is a bet that higher payout on-platform beats splitting catalogs. Basic keeps multi-channel freedom at a lower share. Your break-even depends on your mix — use the illustrative math above with your real numbers.
Where else can I sell educational materials?
Teacher marketplaces, Etsy, storefront tools, and your own website are common paths; what you sell looks different on each channel (TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products). Exclusive terms narrow digital educational cross-listing, not every product type.
Are people still making money on Teachers Pay Teachers?
TPT has not published seller earnings data for this change. Treat income claims in forums as anecdotes, not benchmarks.
Is the TPT marketplace too saturated?
That is a merchandising question, not a membership question. Exclusive vs Basic changes where you may sell digital files and what share TPT keeps, not whether competition exists.
How much does Etsy take from a sale?
Etsy’s fees change over time. Check Etsy’s official fee page before you model a Basic-seller alternative; do not rely on third-party percentages in this article.
What if I miss the 31 December 2026 opt-in deadline?
You become Basic on 1 Jan 2027 with the $29 fee waived and a $5-per-month Premium refund in January (FAQs for Existing Premium Sellers).

If your next step is honest multi-channel packaging for the same puzzles, read TPT vs Etsy vs KDP puzzle products. If you are Basic and building an own store, start with sell puzzle printables on your own website. If you are Exclusive and want Amazon income without breaking digital exclusivity, turn puzzle printables into a KDP book and puzzle maker with commercial rights for how the software license differs from marketplace rules.
