Look Inside Shows Cage Sums. Everyone Else Is Selling the Same 9×9.
A shopper opens Look Inside on a sudoku listing. Grid. Grid. Grid. Every thumbnail is the same scatter of digits they have solved a hundred times, and the only thing separating one book from the next is the cover.
Then yours loads. Dashed cages carved across the board, a small total printed in every corner, and on the harder pages not a single starting digit anywhere. Same familiar 9×9 they already know how to fill, asking something they have not been asked in the last four books they bought.
Killer sudoku is the one variant that changes what the page looks like without changing who it sells to. Every board is checked for a single solution and confirmed solvable by pure logic at exactly the level printed on it, and every board comes out of the run with its matching answer key.

Every cage prints a total. Every total has one answer. The key comes out of the same run.
One Familiar Grid, One Unfamiliar Clue Layer
Sudoku sells because everyone already knows the rules. That is also why the category is a wall of near-identical books, and why a listing that looks slightly different gets the click.
Killer sudoku changes exactly one thing, and it is the right thing. The grid, the rows, the columns and the boxes all behave the way solvers expect. What changes is where the clues come from: instead of a handful of given digits, the board is carved into dashed cages of two to five cells, each printing the total its digits must add up to, with no digit repeating inside a cage. The solver reads a sum, works out which digits can make it, then lets ordinary sudoku decide which cell takes which.
That is a puzzle a sudoku fan can pick up in thirty seconds and then spend an evening on. It is also a book very few of your competitors are printing, because generating killer sudoku that is genuinely fair is a much harder problem than generating the classic kind.
What You Can Publish From One Setup
One generator, one afternoon of settings, and the catalog below is all in reach:
- Standalone killer sudoku books for KDP and other print-on-demand platforms
- Graded collections that run all seven levels from front to back
- A full color edition of any of them, built from the same setup
- Cages-only expert titles for solvers who want the classic form
- Beginner and children’s books on the 6×6 board
- Large-print editions, where six columns keep the page open and readable
- Worksheet packs and printables for Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or your own store
- Mixed logic books that combine killer sudoku with your other Puzzle Maker Pro puzzle types
- Playable sets on your own website, and interactive decks for teaching live
Print the Real Thing: Cages Only, No Given Digits
Sprinkle enough starting digits across a board and almost any cage layout becomes solvable. That is the easy way to make a killer sudoku page, and it produces something that looks like an ordinary sudoku wearing dashed lines.
Set Very Hard, Tough or Extreme and you get the classic form instead: an empty grid where the cage sums carry the entire puzzle. Nothing is given. The solver starts from the extremes, cashes the cages that can only be made one way, totals a box against 45, and builds the board out of arithmetic. That page is the one that makes a serious solver buy book two.
The gentler end of the ladder is deliberately different. Very Easy through Hard fill in a handful of starting digits, so a newer solver always has a foothold and a classroom can finish a page inside a lesson.
Every Killer Sudoku Is Fair at the Level on the Cover
One ambiguous grid in a hundred-page book is a one-star review, a refund, and a listing you stop promoting. Killer sudoku is the puzzle type where that risk is highest, because a badly built cage layout can leave two valid answers and nobody notices until a reader does.
You never ship one. Before a board is kept, its cage layout is checked for uniqueness by brute force, the ambiguity patterns that killer layouts fall into are found and repaired, and any board that still has room for a second answer is thrown away and rolled again. Then the board is solved the way a person would solve it, technique by technique, and it is only kept if the full human ladder cracks it at exactly the level you asked for. A page labelled Normal is genuinely Normal, not “somewhere under Hard”.
So your solver never has to guess, and you never hand-check a grid. The answer key is generated with the puzzle in the same pass, which means the back of the book costs you nothing.
I built this the hard way, and I built it because I have shipped puzzle books myself and know exactly which review does the damage. Puzzle Maker Pro now covers more than thirty puzzle types, and the ones I am proudest of are the ones like this, where the difficult part is invisible on the finished page.
Seven Levels and Two Board Sizes in the Same Catalog
Most puzzle books pick one audience and lose the rest. A killer sudoku catalog does not have to.
Seven graded levels run from Very Easy to Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Tough and Extreme, and the grade describes the hardest technique the board actually needs. Run the low four for a beginner title or a differentiated classroom set, run the top three for the expert edition, or stack all seven into one graded book that carries a reader from the first page to the last.
The 9×9 board is the standard killer. The 6×6 board uses digits 1 to 6 with boxes two cells tall and three wide, which solves in a fraction of the time and gives you children’s titles, warm-up pages at the front of a collection, and large-print layouts where nine columns would crowd the page.

The same generator, sized for a kids’ title or a large-print page.
Ship a Color Killer Sudoku Edition From the Same Setup
A second title is usually a second book’s worth of work. Not here.
Switch the cage colors on and every cell fills with its cage’s own tint, with neighbouring cages always given different colors so no cage bleeds into the one beside it. Nine soft print tints come as standard, you can pick your own, and one button rolls a fresh pastel set. The dashed outlines stay drawn on top, and the tints are chosen light enough that black digits still read cleanly, so the page holds up in greyscale too.
That is a genuinely different product from the same generator. Color killer sudoku books sell alongside black-and-white ones rather than replacing them, so one afternoon of setup gives you two listings.

One generator, two listings. Color sells beside black-and-white, not instead of it.
Make the Cages Look Like Your Book, Not Like a Default
Killer sudoku lives or dies on how the cages print. Get it wrong and the dashed outlines fight the gridlines until the page looks muddy at trim size.
They are drawn inset inside each cage, the way printed puzzle books have always drawn them, with the sum tucked into the inset corner where it cannot collide with a digit. From there the look is yours: set the font family, size and color for every digit on the board, the canvas and cell fill colors, and three separate line weights for the thin cell gridlines, the heavy box dividers and the dashed cage outlines. Printing small? Thicken the cage border alone and leave the rest.
Save it as a preset and the whole look, fonts, colors, line weights and cage tints included, comes back on the next book with one click. Smart Titles then labels the pages for you, filling in the size, the difficulty, or both, so a hundred pages title themselves correctly without you typing a hundred titles.
From One Puzzle to a Whole Graded Book
A graded killer sudoku book is seven books’ worth of fiddling: one run per level, seven output folders to keep straight, and one mislabelled batch away from a reader hitting an Extreme page on chapter two.
Set the quantity to whatever the book needs. Boards generate in well under a second each and no run ever repeats a board, so a chapter comes out while you make coffee. With Productivity, Time Saver drives many rows at once, each with its own size, difficulty, style and quantity, so the entire graded book, Very Easy pages at the front and Extreme at the back, comes out of a single click instead of seven separate runs.
Rows from your other Puzzle Maker Pro modules can ride along in the same run. That is how a mixed logic book gets made: killer sudoku beside your mazes and your word puzzles, one click, one output folder.
Puzzle Book Studio then assembles the pages into the finished book with front matter, contents and answer sections. Creative includes Instant Puzzle Books, which builds a book PDF straight from your current page settings, plus Puzzle Book Studio Creative for full editing of one collection. Productivity adds Puzzle Book Studio Productivity, which combines several collections into one title.
Output Formats and Publishing Options
Every edition exports the page itself as JPG, PNG, SVG and print PDF, puzzle and answer key both. Keep the SVG if you expect to rescale artwork later, and hand the PDF to your print layout.
Creative creates and styles the puzzles, exports all four formats, and builds books through Instant Puzzle Books and Puzzle Book Studio Creative.
Productivity adds Time Saver batch runs and Puzzle Book Studio Productivity for multi-collection books.
Creative + Interactive and Productivity + Interactive add the two channels that take the same puzzles off the page: JSON and HTML output for web play, and Puzzle Slides for teaching live.
Play It on the Web: Your Killer Sudoku, on Your Own Site
A printed book gets solved once, in private, by someone who already bought it. A playable page gets solved by strangers who have not.
Export the set and you get two ways in: HTML you can host anywhere, or a ready-made ZIP you upload to the free BookPublisherTools WordPress plugin. Visitors then solve your killer sudoku right on your site. They click a cell, type a digit, and clear it again when a cage sum proves them wrong, which matters more here than on most puzzles because a killer solve is one long chain of testing combinations.
You choose how the set is presented. A puzzle list lets visitors pick any board from a dropdown and solve it, the zero-effort playable sample. A leveled game turns the same set into a path of levels that unlock in order, with progress and stars saved in the visitor’s browser, and a completion screen that shows your own message and your own button when the last level falls. Put ten free killer sudoku on your site, let a solver finish the run, and the screen that congratulates them is the screen that sells them the book.
Rename the level caption to “Lesson” and the same path becomes self-paced practice a teacher can assign.
Play a killer sudoku in your browser and see exactly what your visitors would get.
The same exported set, presented as a dropdown list or as a path of unlocking levels.
Teach It Live With Puzzle Slides
Killer sudoku is a wonderful thing to solve as a group, because the reasoning is out loud by nature. Somebody spots that the two-cell 17 can only be 8 and 9, somebody else notices the box is one cell short of 45, and the board opens up in front of the room.
Puzzle Slides exports the set as an interactive PowerPoint with a typing box on every blank cell, so the board is filled in live rather than revealed. The boxes sit inset inside their cells and stop short of the cage corners, so the dashed outlines and the printed sums stay visible while the room works. It runs in any standard PowerPoint viewer with nothing to install, so it works in a classroom on the projector you already have, on a tutoring call, in a memory-care activity hour, or on a stream.
The set you printed becomes the lesson you teach, from the same run.
Which Edition Should You Choose?
All four editions create and export real killer sudoku with matching answer keys. What changes is how much you produce at once, and whether the puzzles also play and present.
Creative is right if you are making pages, worksheet sets and single collections. You get the whole module, complete design control including the color cage edition, all four export formats, Instant Puzzle Books, and Puzzle Book Studio Creative.
Productivity is right if you are building full books from one setup. Everything in Creative, plus Time Saver batch runs and Puzzle Book Studio Productivity for multi-collection titles.
Add Interactive to either one and the same puzzles also play on your website and present in a live lesson.
Each column includes everything in the column before it.

Who This Is For
Puzzle book publishers and print-on-demand sellers. You already know sudoku sells. Killer sudoku is how you sell into that demand with a listing that does not look like the fifty around it, and every board is verified fair before it reaches your page, so the reviews stay about the puzzles.
Publishers already using Puzzle Maker Pro. Add killer sudoku to the workflow you already run. Your trim and your book settings carry straight over, you save a Killer Sudoku look as a preset exactly the way you save every other module’s, and Puzzle Book Studio drops the pages into mixed logic collections.
Teachers, tutors and Teachers Pay Teachers sellers. Killer sudoku is addition practice that students do voluntarily. Every cage is a small sum, every box is one subtraction away from a known total, and none of it feels like a worksheet. The lower four levels keep the arithmetic visible and give every cage a foothold, so a class can work a page inside a lesson: print Easy for the student still finding their feet and Hard for the one who finished first, from the same setup. Add Interactive and you can project the board and fill it in together, or set the leveled game as self-paced practice.
Creators building an audience online. Put a free set of killer sudoku on your site, let visitors solve them in the browser, and point the completion screen at the book.
Try It Before You Buy
You do not have to take any of this on faith. The free demo covers every current Puzzle Maker Pro module, so you can generate killer sudoku yourself, look at the cages, check the key, and judge the output before you choose an edition.

Questions Before You Buy
Is there a free demo?
Yes. One free download covers every current Puzzle Maker Pro module, so you can generate killer sudoku and judge the output before you buy. Demo output is watermarked; the files you export from a paid edition are not.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. You can move up to any higher edition after you buy, further up the ladder or with Interactive added on top of the edition you already own. Start with the one that fits the book you are making today.
What makes a killer sudoku different from ordinary sudoku?
The clues. Instead of given digits, the grid is divided into dashed cages of two to five cells, each printing the total its digits must add up to, and no digit repeats inside a cage. The row, column and box rules are exactly the sudoku rules your readers already know.
Are the puzzles really solvable without guessing?
Yes. Every board is verified to have exactly one solution, then solved technique by technique the way a person would and kept only if the human ladder cracks it at the level you asked for. If a solver is stuck, there is a deduction they have not found yet.
Do the puzzles come with answer keys?
Yes. The key is generated with the puzzle in the same run, so the answer section at the back of the book or the teacher copy in a worksheet pack costs you nothing extra.
Which difficulty levels print no starting digits?
Very Hard, Tough and Extreme are usually the pure form, where the cage sums carry the whole puzzle. Very Easy through Hard fill in a handful of cells so newer solvers have a foothold.
Can I make a color killer sudoku book?
Yes. Switch on the cage colors and every cell fills with its cage’s own tint, with neighbouring cages always given different colors. Nine soft print tints come as standard, you can choose your own, and one button rolls a fresh pastel set.
Can I build a whole book quickly?
Yes, with Productivity. Boards generate in well under a second each and no run repeats a board, and Time Saver drives many rows at once, each with its own size, difficulty, style and quantity, so a full graded book comes out of one click.
Which edition do I need for web play?
Creative + Interactive or Productivity + Interactive. Both add JSON and HTML output, so you can host the puzzles yourself or upload the ZIP to the free BookPublisherTools WordPress plugin and let visitors play them on your site, plus Puzzle Slides for live teaching.
Can I use the puzzles in books I sell?
Yes. Creative lets you sell the finished books, worksheets and printable packs you make to your own readers and customers, on KDP, Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or your own store. Productivity adds the right to sell or supply the generated puzzles to other publishers and sellers.
I already own Interactive on another module. Does that cover this one?
Editions are chosen per module, so Killer Sudoku gets its own edition the same way your other modules did. Pick Creative + Interactive or Productivity + Interactive here if you want this module’s puzzles to play online and present live.
Do I need the internet to create puzzles?
No. You generate and export on your own Windows PC.
Where are the tutorials?
How Killer Sudoku Puzzles Work covers the solver’s side, and How to Create Killer Sudoku Puzzles in Puzzle Maker Pro walks through the module screen from an empty grid to a folder of print-ready pages.
Give the Sudoku Shelf Something It Has Not Seen
Another classic sudoku title lands in a category that already has ten thousand of them, and it competes on cover art alone. A killer sudoku title competes on the puzzle.
Six months from now your catalog can hold a beginner 6×6, a graded nine-level collection, a cages-only expert edition and a full color set, all built from one afternoon of setup, all carrying answer keys you never checked by hand.
Start with the demo. Generate a few boards, look at the cages, solve one, and see what your next listing could be.
Stop competing on cover art. Killer sudoku keeps the 9×9 your readers already know and replaces the given digits with dashed cages and printed sums, so Look Inside shows something the shelf around you does not. Every board is verified to have one solution, confirmed solvable by logic at the level it claims, and comes with its matching answer key. Try the free demo, then pick your edition above.
