Signpost Mazes

Price range: $ 47 through $ 177

A fresh logic puzzle your competitors are not publishing, and one your readers learn in a single sentence: every square holds a signpost, so pick a lane at the top and follow them to the exit. Exactly one lane gets there, and every board comes with its matching solution page. Try it free, then choose the edition that fits how you publish.

The Fresh Puzzle Type That Does Not Need Explaining

Every publisher wants a puzzle nobody else is running. Almost nobody ships one, because an unfamiliar puzzle feels like a trap: a page of rules at the front of the book, confused readers, and a review that says “I could not work out what I was supposed to do.”

Signpost Maze is the rare exception. Here is the entire rule: every square holds a signpost, so pick a lane at the top and follow the signposts one square at a time until you reach the exit. That is it. There is nothing else to learn, and no page of instructions to write.

Watch it land. Your reader picks the third lane, follows the arrow right, then down, then down again, then left, and runs off the edge of the grid. Wrong lane. They try the fifth. Right, down, down, right, down, and there is the exit. That whole loop took eight seconds to learn and no explanation at all, and now they want to know which of the other lanes were traps.

I have shipped puzzle types that nobody wanted, and I have watched a good one die because the rules took a paragraph to explain. That is what taught me the test: the puzzle types that earn their place are the ones that look new but read as obvious. After 30+ of them, Signpost Maze is the cleanest example I have found, a maze with no walls, where the only decision you ever make is which lane to enter. See a finished board and its answer key in the gallery above, or try the free demo and generate a few before you spend anything.

A Maze With No Walls, and Only One Real Decision

Mazes are corridors and dead ends. Signpost Maze throws the corridors away and keeps the tension.

The board is a plain rectangular grid, and every cell shows a signpost pointing up, down, left, or right. The top row is a row of entry lanes. You pick one, and from that moment every move is forced: step where the signpost points, read the new signpost, step again. Exactly one lane threads all the way to the single exit on the bottom row. The rest are decoys that run off the edge or loop back on themselves, and they can never reach the exit or join the true route.

Here is the part that makes it a proper logic puzzle rather than a guessing game: the board never marks the true lane. Finding it is the whole puzzle. A decoy can run in the cell right next to the true route for half the grid without ever touching it, so the board cannot be eyeballed. Your reader has to trace.

That gives you two things a saturated category rarely offers at once: a puzzle that looks unlike anything on the shelf, and a rule so short it fits in the page header.

Every board is generated with its matching solution page in the same pass, so the answer key is never a separate job, and you never trace a grid by hand to check it.

Make Every Direction Anything You Want

This is the lever that turns one module into a catalog. The four signposts are not baked into the puzzle. They are just four things a solver has to tell apart, so you can swap them for numbers, letters, colored shapes, or your own images, and Puzzle Maker Pro prints a small legend beside the grid showing which item means which direction.

Four snowflake shapes and you have a winter book. Four pumpkins and you have a Halloween title. Four animals and you have a children’s series. Your own mascot or logo set and you have a branded puzzle nobody can copy. The logic underneath is identical every time, so a themed book is a styling decision, not a new puzzle to design.

A re-skinned board using colored circles, with its direction legend above the grid
Most puzzle types resist theming because their clues carry meaning that a picture cannot hold. This one does not: a direction is a direction, whatever you draw it as. That makes Signpost Maze one of the easiest puzzles in the whole system to build a seasonal or branded series around.

Everything You Can Build With Signpost Maze

One puzzle type that themes freely and needs no instruction page covers a lot of shelves. You are not buying a single book idea here, you are buying the interior for as many of these as you care to publish:

  • Standalone Signpost Maze books for KDP and other print-on-demand platforms
  • Seasonal and holiday titles built from a themed four-icon set
  • Children’s activity books using animal or vehicle icons instead of arrows
  • Branded or corporate puzzle books using your own logo and mascot set
  • Mixed activity books combining Signpost Maze with your other Puzzle Maker Pro types
  • Classroom warm-ups and tutoring worksheets, with the answer key already generated
  • Playable web puzzle sets that draw solvers to your own site (Interactive add-on)

Dial the Difficulty Without Changing the Grid

Most generators make a puzzle harder by making it bigger, which wrecks your page layout. Signpost Maze does not.

Difficulty here controls how long and how winding the true route is, not the size of the board. Easy picks a short, direct lane. Hard picks a long, twisting one that doubles back through the grid and forces your solver to keep track of far more. A whole book can therefore run from gentle to punishing at one fixed grid size, which means one page template, one layout, and a difficulty curve your readers actually feel.

Key Creation Workflows

Fill a Signpost Maze book’s interior in one run. Set the grid size and difficulty, set the quantity, and generate up to 999 boards in a single pass. Every puzzle is built from its own random seed, and each one arrives with its solution page, so a book’s worth of boards is a single session rather than a week of page-by-page work.

Build a themed series from a folder of icons. Hand the content control four images and every board in the batch re-skins to them, legend included. A Christmas set, a farm-animal set, and a mascot set are three books from one purchase.

Ramp the whole book from easy to hard automatically. Time Saver’s Add Progression builds the rows for you, stepping grid size and difficulty together from 5×5 Easy up to 8×8 Hard. One click lays out a complete difficulty curve instead of you configuring each batch by hand.

Print sharp at any trim size. Export PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF of both the puzzle and its solution. Vector output stays crisp from a pocket activity book to a full-page large-print title.

From One Puzzle to a Full Book

A single board is a sample. A book is the product, and two shared parts of the system close that gap. Time Saver generates batch after batch across the sizes and difficulties you choose, including that ready-made easy-to-hard progression, so you are never building pages one at a time. Puzzle Book Studio assembles the result into a finished, print-ready book with full control of fonts, titles, page numbers, layout, and trim size, and lets you mix Signpost Maze with your other puzzle types into one varied collection. An afternoon in, you have a book rather than a folder of images.

Output Formats and Publishing Options

Whatever you are building, the boards have to leave the software looking like something you would put your name on. Every edition exports print-ready PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF of both the puzzle and its solution, so that part is never the question. What changes by edition is how far you can take it:

  • Lite: the full puzzle generator with the built-in signpost arrows, static export of puzzle and solution, and Instant Puzzle Books for a quick book PDF from your current settings.
  • Creative: adds content variation, the re-skin that turns the four directions into your numbers, letters, colors, or images with an automatic legend, plus Puzzle Book Studio for full book design.
  • Productivity: adds Time Saver batch creation with the Add Progression ramp, and Puzzle Book Studio with multiple puzzle sets in one project.
  • Interactive: the add-on that takes Signpost Maze off paper. It adds JSON and HTML output (host the puzzles anywhere, or upload a ZIP to the free BookPublisherTools WordPress plugin) and online play on your own site. Interactive is bought on top of Creative or Productivity, giving you Creative Interactive or Productivity Interactive.

Play It on the Web (Interactive)

A puzzle this unfamiliar sells far better once someone has solved one, and that is exactly what web play is for. With the Interactive add-on you publish a set that plays right in the browser on your own site. A visitor presses an entry lane and drags the route out one cell at a time, and the game only lets them move where the current signpost points, so it teaches the rule by making it impossible to break. Nobody reads an instruction paragraph. They just play, and thirty seconds later they understand your book.

You choose how the set appears: a simple dropdown list of puzzles to pick and solve, or a leveled game where boards unlock in order, progress and stars save in the visitor’s browser, and a finish screen shows a button you choose. Put three or ten puzzles on your site as a free taster, and when a visitor finishes the last one, that completion screen carries your own message and a “get the full book” button pointing wherever you like. It gives fans a reason to stay and come back, and it hands teachers and course creators a self-paced practice path. You publish the set, and your readers play it on your site through the free WordPress plugin, then reach for the book.

Re-skinned boards play online too, legend and all, so a themed set works on the web exactly as it does in print.

Which Edition Should You Choose?

  • Lite: you want the lowest-cost start and the classic arrow signposts, with a quick book from Instant Puzzle Books.
  • Creative: you want the theming lever, seasonal, kids’, and branded books built from your own icon sets, plus Puzzle Book Studio to design books you are proud to sell. This is the edition for most publishers.
  • Productivity: you are producing at volume, and you want Time Saver batches with the ready-made difficulty ramp plus multiple sets in one book project.
  • Add Interactive to either one when you want the puzzles to leave the page: JSON and HTML output, and playable Signpost Mazes on your own website.

The ladder is Lite, Creative, Productivity. Interactive is an add-on rather than a rung, so you buy it on top of Creative or Productivity:

Lite Creative Productivity
Signpost Maze generator (built-in arrows) Yes Yes Yes
Print/PDF export (puzzle + solution) Yes Yes Yes
Styling and Smart Titles Yes Yes Yes

Adding Interactive to Creative gives you Creative Interactive; adding it to Productivity gives you Productivity Interactive. Both unlock the same thing for Signpost Maze: JSON, HTML output, and online play.

Who This Is For

  • POD / KDP publishers who want a fresh type without the risk. If you have been publishing into saturated maze and word-search categories, or buying PLR because designing something new felt like too much work, this is a puzzle that looks genuinely new and still explains itself in one line.
  • Seasonal and themed-book publishers. The four-icon re-skin makes a holiday or seasonal title a styling pass rather than a new product.
  • Children’s activity and workbook makers. Animal or vehicle icons instead of arrows, at a gentle difficulty, with the answer key generated for you.
  • Teachers, tutors, and online course creators. Printable warm-ups that need no rule explanation, and a self-paced web practice path with the Interactive add-on.

Try It Before You Buy

A free demo of Signpost Maze is always available. Open the demo, generate a few boards, trace a lane or two yourself, and export a page to judge the print quality. When you are ready, choose the edition that fits how you publish, up above.

Licensing and Commercial Use

You own what you create. With the Creative edition you have a commercial license to sell the puzzles you generate to end customers and readers: books, worksheets, and printables on KDP, Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers, or your own store. The Productivity edition adds a business license on top of that, so you can sell or supply the puzzles you generate to other publishers and sellers. Lite is the entry edition for creating and printing puzzles.

One lane reaches the exit. The others run out. This is what your reader is actually doing, and why the board cannot be solved at a glance.

Questions Before You Buy

Is there a free demo? Yes. Open the demo, generate a few boards, and export a page before you decide.

Will my readers understand a puzzle they have never seen? Yes, and this is the reason to pick this one. The rule is a single sentence: follow the signpost in each square, one square at a time. Readers learn it by tracing one lane, without an instructions page.

Is every puzzle solvable? Yes. Exactly one entry lane reaches the exit, and every board is generated with its matching solution page in the same pass.

Can a wrong lane accidentally reach the exit? No. Decoy lanes are built so they can never join or cross the true route. They run off the edge of the grid or loop back on themselves instead.

Can I use my own pictures instead of arrows? Yes, with the Creative edition and up. Supply at least four images, or pick numbers, letters, or colors, and a legend prints beside the grid showing which one means which direction.

How do I make the puzzle harder? Raise the difficulty. It lengthens and winds the true route rather than growing the grid, so a book can run easy to hard at one fixed size and one page layout.

Can I make a whole book, not just single puzzles? Yes. Lite builds Instant Puzzle Books, Creative adds Puzzle Book Studio for full book design, and Productivity adds Time Saver batches, the ready-made easy-to-hard progression, and multiple sets in one project.

Can people play these on my website? Yes, with the Interactive add-on, which you can put on top of either Creative or Productivity. Publish a set as a dropdown list or a leveled game through the free WordPress plugin, with a “get the full book” button on the finish screen.

What is the difference between Productivity and Interactive? Productivity is about volume: Time Saver batches, the easy-to-hard progression, and multiple sets in one book project. Interactive is about channel: JSON, HTML output, and puzzles that play on your own website. They are independent, so you can take either, or both.

Which edition should I start with? Creative suits most publishers, since the four-icon re-skin is where the themed books come from. Add Productivity when you batch at volume, and Interactive when you want the puzzles playable online.

Publish the Puzzle Everyone Else Is Too Nervous to Try

Keep publishing into the same saturated categories and your next book competes on cover and price alone, because the puzzle inside it is the one already sitting on forty other shelves. Signpost Maze is the way out that does not cost you readers: new enough to stop a browser, simple enough that nobody bounces off it. Six months from now your catalog can hold a Halloween set, an animal set for kids, and a large-print arrows edition, all from one module and one afternoon each. Start with the free demo, trace a couple of lanes, and see how fast it clicks.
