How Hand-drawn Mazes Work

Summary: A Hand-drawn Maze is a tangle of looping ribbon corridors that cross over and under each other, like a pile of dropped ribbons. You solve it by tracing one corridor from Start to Finish — and the trick is that a crossing is a bridge, not a junction, so you never change corridor there.

Overview

Most mazes are corridors cut into a grid. A Hand-drawn Maze looks like someone drew it freehand: long
ribbon corridors that loop across the page and pass over and under one another, exactly like the
tangle mazes in children’s activity books. There is no visible grid, no square cells, no straight walls —
just curving corridors, with open ends poking out of the tangle and marked S and E. Most have one
of each; a harder one can have up to four on a side, and only one of them is real.

It reads as playful and drawn-by-hand, which is why it works so well for young solvers and for
activity-book pages that need to look warm rather than technical. But the tangle is doing real work: the
overlaps mean you cannot solve it by eye the way you can scan a small grid maze. You have to commit to a
corridor and follow it.

The Goal

Start at the S opening and trace a continuous corridor until you come out at the E opening. Every
Hand-drawn Maze ships with its solution already drawn.

The Rules

  • The corridor is the white channel, not the black line. Each corridor is drawn as a pair of thin outlines with clear space between them. You travel in that clear space; the outlines are its walls.
  • A crossing is a bridge, never a junction. Where two corridors meet, one passes over and the other tunnels under — you can see the under-corridor break and reappear on the far side. You are on one of them, and you stay on it. You never switch corridors at a crossing.
  • Only a fork changes your corridor. When the ribbon genuinely splits — the outlines open out and two channels lead away — that is a real junction, and that is the only place a choice exists.
  • Only one bridge per crossing. The generator guarantees that two corridors at most meet at any one spot, so a crossing is never an ambiguous pile-up of three or four ribbons.
  • Dead ends are real. A corridor that narrows to a stub and stops is a dead end. Back up to your last fork.

Loops — why this is not a “one path” maze

Most maze puzzles are perfect mazes: exactly one route between any two points. A Hand-drawn Maze is
not, by default. Loops are switched on, which is what gives the tangle its braided, wound-up
look — so there can be more than one way to get from S to E, and a corridor you follow may curl back
and rejoin a corridor you have already walked. The printed solution shows one valid route; if a solver
finds a different one that also arrives at E, they have not made a mistake.

If the maker turns loops off, the maze becomes a tree: exactly one route between any two points, with
dead ends as the only distractors. That is the tighter, more classic puzzle — and a good choice for a
book aimed at older solvers who expect a single answer.

Decoy openings — more than one way in

A Hand-drawn Maze can be printed with up to four openings on the start side and four on the finish side.
Only one of them is the real start, and only one is the real finish. Every other opening is a
decoy: it looks identical, it leads into a genuine corridor that threads deep into the tangle — even
passing under real corridors on the way — and then it dead-ends. It never reaches the other end of the
maze.

That is the point: with three S’s on the page, the solver cannot guess. They have to trace. It is the
single biggest difficulty lever in the module, and it costs nothing in ink or page space.

How to Start Solving

  1. Trace from both ends. Put a finger on S and a pencil on E and work inward; meeting in the middle is far quicker than committing to one direction.
  2. Ride through the crossings. When your corridor passes under another, do not stop — keep going where it re-emerges on the far side. Learning to read the break in the outline is most of the skill.
  3. Mark the forks. At a genuine split, pick one branch and put a light tick on the other so you know what you have not tried.
  4. Back up out of stubs. A dead end costs you only the walk back to the last fork.
  5. With several openings, expect to fail twice. Two of three S’s are meant to waste your time. Trace each one until it dies, then take the survivor.

Variants a maker can print

The same rules cover every setting, so a book can mix them freely:

  • Denser or sparser. The junction control is a density dial. A very sparse tangle is a wide, friendly maze for a small child; a dense one fills a page with corridors for an adult.
  • Rounder or sketchier. A smoothness control decides whether corners are cut into flowing curves or left as hand-sketch angles.
  • No bridges at all. Switching tunnels off gives a flat, non-overlapping tangle — every corridor stays on the surface and there are zero crossings. Younger solvers find this much easier, because the over/under reading is exactly the part that trips them up.
  • A picture at each end. The maker can reserve a clear corner at the start and finish and drop an image in — a mouse at S and cheese at E — so the maze tells a small story instead of showing two letters.

FAQ

Is there always only one solution to a hand-drawn maze?

No — not by default. Loops are on unless the maker turns them off, so more than one valid route from S to
E can exist. The printed solution shows one of them. With loops off the maze is a tree and there is
exactly one route.

Can I change corridors where two of them cross?

No. A crossing is an over/under bridge, not a junction — the corridors are on different levels there.
The only place you can change corridor is a genuine fork, where the ribbon splits and two channels lead
away.

Why does the maze have three “S” openings?

Because only one of them is the real start. The rest are decoys: real corridors that thread into the
tangle and dead-end without ever reaching the finish. They exist to stop you guessing the entrance.

Are hand-drawn mazes suitable for young children?

Very — that is the style’s home. For the youngest solvers, set a low junction count and switch tunnels
and bridges off, which removes the over/under reading entirely and leaves a wide, wandering corridor
maze. Turn both back on as the reader gets older.

Can I play a hand-drawn maze online?
