Summary: This walkthrough takes you from an empty Word Ladder screen to a finished run of clued or plain word ladders with answer keys. You will choose the word length and ladder size, pick plain or clued pages, place the clues, steer the words with your own list, check and rewrite the clues, and turn the run into a book or a worksheet set.
Overview
Word Ladder is a word ladder maker for print and the web: a column of word boxes with the first and last words printed and blank rungs between them for the solver to fill, one letter changed per step. Every ladder comes with its answer key, and every Create produces a whole run of them, ready for Instant Puzzle Books or Puzzle Book Studio to assemble into a print-ready book.
The generator does the part that is hard to do by hand. It finds two end words the right number of steps apart, builds the chain between them from real words, and makes sure the end word is exactly as far away as the rungs say, so the solver never has a rung to spare. By default the two end words also go together in meaning wherever the dictionary allows, like BURN and FIRE or HOGS and PIGS, which makes each ladder feel written rather than generated. And every rung the solver fills gets a clue, written for you from the built-in clue data, with no AI setup needed. The automatic clues are short, plain definitions: Farm storage building for BARN, Price for travel for FARE.

Required Modules
Word Ladder — the module itself. A free demo covers every current module, so you can try the puzzle and the settings before buying. The demo makes one watermarked puzzle at a time; any paid edition removes both limits.
Standard makes complete ladders automatically, both end words and every clue chosen for you, at every word length, ladder size and page style. It exports the static formats (JPG, PNG, SVG and print PDF) and includes Instant Puzzle Books, a book PDF assembled straight from your current book settings. Creative adds your own words (anchor words, and start-and-end pairs such as COLD to WARM), the Clues tab for checking, editing and AI-rewriting every clue, full design control over the page, and Puzzle Book Studio Creative (one puzzle collection, full book editing). Productivity adds Time Saver for batch runs, Puzzle Book Studio Productivity, which combines several collections into one book, and JSON export. Creative + Interactive and Productivity + Interactive add online play, so the same ladders become browser games on your own site.

Productivity and Productivity + Interactive add the right to sell or supply the puzzles themselves to other publishers and sellers.
Preparation
The generator brings its own dictionary and its own clues, so there is nothing to assemble before your first run. Decide two things up front: roughly how many ladders the book or worksheet set needs, and whether your readers get plain ladders (just the two ends) or clued ones.
If you are on Creative and want a theme, have your word list ready too: a few seasonal or subject words, or pairs of start and end words you want to connect.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Open the Module
Pick Word Ladder from the puzzle list. The module screen opens with the preset buttons across the top, a quantity box, and the Main, Settings, Words, Clues, Style and Layout tabs. The ladder itself is shaped on Main; Settings holds the fine-tuning; Words and Clues are where Creative brings in your own words and clues. On Standard those two tabs are still visible, each with a short note that it is a Creative feature; your ladders still get their words and clues automatically.
Choose the Word Length
On the Main tab, set Letters per word to 4, 5, 6 or 7. Four is the classic and the default: short, everyday words that almost every reader knows, which is why most word ladders in print use them. Five letters gives a noticeably meatier puzzle that still reads as familiar. Six and seven letters draw on a smaller, less everyday pool of longer words, many of them -ING verb forms, so they suit older solvers and the challenge section at the back of a book. Proofread a long-word run before you publish it for a general audience.
Choose the Ladder Size
Difficulty sets how long the ladder is. Easy is four rungs, two of them for the solver to fill. Medium, the default, is five rungs with three to fill. Hard is seven rungs with five to fill. Ladder size and word length are the two levers for grading a set: four-letter Easy ladders for beginners, five-letter or Hard ladders for the stretch.
Choose Plain or Clued Pages
Page decides what the solver gets besides the two end words, and starts out on the plain style. Clueless (ends given) prints only the ends and blank rungs — the classic brain-teaser look. Clued (a clue per rung) prints a short clue beside every rung the solver fills, which turns the ladder into a vocabulary exercise as well as a word puzzle. The two end words never carry a clue; they are already on the page.
Both choices print the same ladders, so you can make one run plain and the next run clued without the words changing underneath you. A clued ladder has one intended answer. A plain ladder can sometimes be solved by more than one correct chain, and the answer key shows one of them, so if you publish plain ladders, add a line to your instructions page such as “Other correct chains are possible; the key shows one.”
Choose Where the Clues Go
Clue position applies to clued pages. Right of the boxes is the default and keeps the ladder a compact block of boxes with the clues reading across from it, one line per rung. Left of the boxes mirrors it, which is handy on the left-hand page of a spread. Above the boxes puts each clue in a line of its own above its rung, which makes the puzzle taller and narrower and prints the boxes smaller on the same page.
Changing the clue position never changes the ladders, and it never throws away clues you have prepared, so you can try each layout against your trim size freely.
Fine-Tune the Ladders
The Settings tab holds four controls that most runs never need to touch.
Related start and end words is on by default. It asks the generator to choose end words that go together in meaning, like BURN and FIRE or HOGS and PIGS. At four and five letters it reliably finds a related pair; at six and seven letters, where the choice of words is smaller, it finds one where it can and tells you how many ladders use an unrelated pair. Turn it off for a wider choice of ladders.
Start letter (optional) restricts the first word’s initial letter, which is useful for an alphabet-themed page or a letter-of-the-week worksheet. It applies when you have not supplied a word list.
Place list word at and Validate supplied words only matter when you use the Words tab, described next.
Use Your Own Words (Creative)
The Words tab is where you steer the ladders, on Creative and above. An empty list gives you a solid general-interest run from the built-in dictionary. To make a set that stands out, such as a holiday book, an animal book or this week’s spelling words, give it your own words.
One word per line makes it an anchor: your word becomes the printed top or bottom word of a ladder, the one the solver starts from or aims for, and the generator fills the rungs between. Place list word at on the Settings tab decides which end — Start of the ladder (the default), End of the ladder, or Either end. A list of winter words gives you a run of ladders that each start from SNOW, COLD or SLED. Each word has to match the Letters per word setting.
Two words on one line pins both ends of a ladder: type COLD,WARM (or COLD WARM, or COLD -> WARM) and you get a ladder from COLD to WARM with the middle filled in for you. One pair makes one ladder, so ten pairs make ten ladders, and the run sizes itself to your list.
The two words of a pair have to be the right number of steps apart for the ladder size you chose. COLD to WARM takes four steps, which makes it a five-rung Medium ladder. Ask for it at Easy and the generator skips it and tells you exactly why and what to change: “COLD → WARM was skipped: they are 4 step(s) apart, which makes a 5-rung ladder, and this run is set to 4 rungs. Set difficulty to Medium to use this pair.” A pair that cannot be connected at all, or that uses a word outside the dictionary, is reported the same way, and the good pairs beside it still generate.
Validate supplied words, on the Settings tab and on by default, checks every word in your list against the dictionary before using it and names any it had to skip. Keep it on: every rung of a ladder is meant to be a real word, and this is what stops a typo from becoming one. If it rejects a word you know is fine, untick it to use the word anyway.

Set the Quantity
Type your quantity into the box: the number of ladders in the run. No ladder repeats inside a run, and a ladder and its reverse count as the same ladder, so a long run never hands the reader the same climb twice. Preview always shows a single ladder; the full run comes from Create.
If you pinned start-and-end pairs on the Words tab, the run makes one ladder per pair. If you prepare your words on the Clues tab (next step), set the quantity first: Prepare makes that many ladders, and from then on the run prints the ladders you prepared.
To size a book, work backwards from your target page count: take off the title page and table of contents, then divide by the pages each ladder uses in your book layout. At one ladder per page that is two pages each, the puzzle and its answer key; a Word Ladder grid is small, so a book layout with several ladders per page fits far more into the same book.
Check and Rewrite the Clues (Creative)
Every clued ladder gets its clues automatically. The Clues tab, on Creative and above, is for when you want to read them, change them, or give them a different voice before you print.
- Set the quantity, then press Prepare words. The generator makes your run once and lists every word of every ladder in a table, with the ladder it belongs to, the word and its clue. The start and end words are greyed out, because they print without a clue.
- Type over any clue you want to change. Your wording is kept for that word, and a word that turns up in two ladders shares the one clue.
- To change them all at once, pick a style and press AI: rewrite clues…. The picker offers fourteen voices, among them Standard, For kids, Educational, Riddle, Rhyming, Synonym and Fill in the blank, so the same run can become a children’s worksheet or a riddle page. AI uses your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, or Puzzle Maker Pro AI credits. Read the rewritten clues in the table before you print, especially for a children’s set; you can still type over any of them.
- Press Create. You get exactly the ladders you prepared, with exactly the clues in the table.
The prepared ladders belong to the settings you prepared them with. If you change something that shapes the words, such as the word length, the ladder size or your word list, the tab tells you the prepared words no longer match and asks you to prepare again; Create waits until you do. Switching between plain and clued pages, or moving the clues from right to left or above, does not affect your prepared words. Back to automatic clears the table and returns to automatic clues.
Style the Page
Style is the shared tab you know from other modules. The one control particular to Word Ladder is Given rung fill, at the top of the Colors group: the shading on the two printed end words. It ships in light grey so the ends stand out from the blanks; set it to a soft colour to match a book’s palette, then save the look as a Word Ladder preset. Set the Title
Titles live on the Layout tab. Smart Titles fills the title in from the puzzle’s own settings, so a whole run labels itself without you typing a title per page. Word Ladder offers:
- Word Ladder — e.g. “Word Ladder”
- Word Ladder Puzzle — e.g. “4-Letter Word Ladder”
- Puzzle — e.g. “5-Rung Ladder”
- Custom — your own text (the default)
The Puzzle option suits a graded book, because every page announces its own ladder length. The same list also fills the puzzle’s description field, which starts out as “Change one letter at a time. Generate and Export
Press Create in the Create Puzzles panel. Each ladder appears with its answer key, and the run writes both to your output folder in the formats ticked in the app’s output settings: PNG and/or JPG, plus SVG and print PDF if you want them. SVG is the one to keep if you expect to rescale artwork later; PDF is the one to hand to a print layout. If the generator had to skip a pinned pair or a word from your list, the run says so here, by name.
On Productivity, the run can also write JSON, the puzzle data files for your own apps and workflows. On Creative + Interactive or Productivity + Interactive, the same run also produces the web-playable version, so the ladders you just made can go straight onto your own site as browser games — and on plain ladders, the game accepts any correct chain, not just the one on the key.
Scale Up to a Book
On every paid edition, one Create makes the whole run, and Instant Puzzle Books turns it into a book PDF from your current book settings: trim size, margins and how many puzzles share a page. Puzzle Book Studio (Creative and up) gives you the same book in a live editor, with full control of fonts, titles and layout. Both add a title page, a table of contents, and a footer on every puzzle that tells the reader which page its solution is on. For a worksheet set, a letter or A4 page with two to four ladders and the answers on a separate sheet is a book layout choice, not a different module.
A graded book with several sections is where Productivity earns its place. FAQ
Do I need AI to get clues?
No. Every clued ladder gets its clues automatically from the built-in clue data, on every edition. AI is only used if you choose to rewrite the clues in a different voice on the Clues tab, on Creative and above.
Can I choose both the start and the end word?
Yes, on Creative and above. Type the two words on one line of the Words tab, such as COLD,WARM, and the generator fills the middle. The pair has to be the right number of steps apart for the ladder size; if it is not, the run tells you why and names the size that fits whenever one does.
Why did the generator skip my word?
With Validate supplied words on, a word that is not in the dictionary is skipped, and the run names it. A word of a different length from Letters per word is not used either, so set the length to match your list. A start-and-end pair that does not fit the ladder size is skipped with a message that names the pair and the size that fits.
Can a plain ladder have more than one answer?
Yes. On a plain ladder, any chain of real words that changes one letter per step is correct, and the answer key shows one of them. A clued ladder has one intended answer, because the clues name each rung.
Which edition do I need for a word ladder book?
For a single-section book, Standard is enough: one Create makes the run and Instant Puzzle Books builds the book. Creative adds your own words, clue editing, full design control and Puzzle Book Studio. Productivity adds Time Saver and multi-collection books, for a graded book with several sections in one pass.
