Puzzle book trim size and page count
Two numbers sit under every puzzle book you will ever publish on KDP: how big the page is and how many pages there are. Every other decision — grid size, puzzles per page, where the solutions go — either feeds those two numbers or is constrained by them. Pick them by habit and the book fights you the whole way; pick them from the puzzle outward and the rest of the format mostly decides itself.
This page is that decision. Which trim suits which puzzle family, what puzzles-per-page actually trades away, how page count is arithmetic rather than a choice, and why one project should be able to ship on a second trim without a rebuild. It is not a Puzzle Book Studio walkthrough and it is not a KDP setup tour.
Trim follows the grid
The page exists to hold the puzzle at a size a buyer can solve in pencil. That makes trim a property of the puzzle type, not a preference.
- Compact grids fit compact trims. A 9×9 sudoku is 81 cells no matter what page it prints on, and one grid with room for pencil digits sits comfortably on a 6×9 page. Number-sequence pages and small logic grids behave the same way: a symbol per cell, and the cell count is fixed, so a modest page holds one puzzle well.
- Word-dense puzzles want real estate. A word search is a grid plus a word list, and both must stay readable. A 20×20 grid with a thirty-word list is cramped on 6×9 and natural on 8.5×11. Shrink the trim and something has to give — a smaller grid, fewer and shorter words, or type nobody thanks you for.
- Mazes buy space, not cells. A maze gets harder and more satisfying with more corridors, and corridors need width for a pen. Kids’ maze pages and dense adult mazes both push toward the larger trims for the same reason from opposite ends: wide corridors for small hands, many corridors for sharp solvers.
- The middle trims are compromises, and sometimes the right ones. A 7×10 or 8×10 page holds a bigger word search than 6×9 without the workbook feel of 8.5×11. If the book mixes puzzle types, the trim has to suit the hungriest puzzle in it — the sudoku will not mind extra room; the word search will mind the lack of it.

One useful mental test: print one puzzle page at final size and hand someone a pencil. If they hesitate before writing in a cell, the grid is too small for the trim — and no cover copy fixes that.
Puzzles per page is the other half of the trim decision
The same trim reads completely differently at one puzzle per page versus two. That choice trades three things against each other:
- Solving comfort. One puzzle per page means bigger cells, room for working, and a book that feels generous. Two per page means a denser book and a buyer who occasionally solves into the neighboring grid’s margin.
- Perceived value. A hundred puzzles at one per page is a substantial book on the shelf. The same hundred at two per page is a slim volume — same content, different first impression, and neither is wrong. Gift books lean generous; travel-size and value-branded books lean dense.
- Page count. Puzzles per page is the multiplier in the arithmetic below. Halving it doubles the puzzle section.
Solutions play by different rules. Nobody solves on the answer key, so solutions compress — several small grids to a page at the back is the standard convention, and it is why the solutions section is always shorter than the puzzle section it answers. What a trustworthy key looks like is its own subject; here it is enough that keys take pages, and fewer of them than the puzzles did.
Page count is arithmetic, not a choice
Once trim and puzzles-per-page are set, page count stops being a decision. It is:
puzzle pages + solution pages + front matter = page count
Take a concrete case: 100 puzzles at one per page is 100 pages. Solutions at six per page add 17. A title page, copyright page, one how-it-works page, and a contents page add 4. That book is roughly 121 pages before you have chosen anything else — and if the same content runs two puzzles per page, the puzzle section drops to 50 and the book lands near 71.

Two consequences follow. First, on print-on-demand every page is print cost, so the honest lever on page count is puzzle count and puzzles-per-page — decided up front, with the arithmetic in view — not padding or squeezing after the fact. Second, the number a shopper sees on the listing is downstream of decisions you make before generating a single puzzle. Work the arithmetic backward from the book you want (“a ~120-page large-grid sudoku book”) and it tells you the puzzle count to generate.
Front matter deserves one sentence here: it is part of the count, and it is also the part of the book a shopper actually samples. The Look Inside preview opens on your trim decision at true size — the first pages are where a buyer judges whether the grid is solvable in pencil, which is the whole trim question asked back at you.
One project, a second trim
The reason to treat trim as a composition setting rather than a fate: the same book content can ship at more than one size.
In Puzzle Book Studio, trim size is a page width and height in inches with an optional bleed allowance, alongside the page margins — so 6×9, 7×10, and 8.5×11 are the same control with different numbers. Layout is defined per puzzle set (puzzle position and size, title and description areas, spacing) and applied across the set, and the Studio warns when something no longer fits, such as a word list that exceeds its space. Change the trim and those warnings are exactly the feedback you want before a proof copy, not after.
That is what makes a second trim an edition instead of a project. The puzzles, the ordering, the titles, and the solutions pairing are done work; the new trim re-flows the same composition, and re-rendering an adjusted book is a quick pass — the multi-format rendering tutorial covers the mechanics of rendering and re-rendering when you get there. The same one-project economics runs along two other axes as well: large print varies type and grid size over the same content for the accessibility shelf, and multi-format output varies the file format over the same composition. Trim is the third axis: same book, different page.
The practical payoff is catalog-shaped. A travel-size 6×9 edition and a desk-size 8.5×11 edition of the same title are two listings from one composed book. Decide the first trim from the grid, as above; the second trim is a layout pass and a re-render, not a second production run.
What not to do
Do not pick the trim before looking at the puzzle. “All my books are 6×9” is a habit, not a format decision, and the first word search book will expose it.
Do not shrink the grid to rescue a bad trim. A 20×20 word search scaled down until it fits a 6×9 page is technically present and practically unsolvable. Change the trim or change the puzzle spec — honestly.
Do not pad the count. Blank versos, quote pages, and oversized front matter add print cost and subtract trust, and the preview shows them first.
Do not change trim mid-series. Whatever size the first volume shipped on is a promise to every buyer who shelves the second one next to it.

The whole point
Trim size and page count are outputs of the puzzle, not preferences. The grid decides the trim, puzzles-per-page sets the density, and the page count follows as arithmetic from puzzle count, solutions, and front matter. Make those calls in that order, keep them in one composed project, and a second trim — larger, smaller, large-print — is an export decision instead of a rebuild.
