Honeycomb Rules
- Every answer is exactly six letters. One letter per white cell, and a hex has exactly six cells around it, so the length never varies. That is the single most useful fact on the page: you are always looking for a six-letter word.
- The number is in the black hex; the answer goes around it. Black hexes hold clue numbers only — never letters. Clue 1 in the list belongs to the hex printed with a 1, and its answer occupies the six white cells touching that hex.
- A marker shows where each answer starts. Each numbered hex carries a small arrow or dot — whichever the setter chose — just inside its edge, on the side facing the cell where the answer begins. That cell holds the first letter. An arrow also points the way the remaining five follow; a dot only shows you which side to start on.
- Every answer on a page reads the same way round. A Honeycomb is set to clockwise or counter-clockwise for the whole puzzle, not hex by hex. So on a dotted board, read one answer against its clue to learn the direction, and it then applies to every clue on the page.
- Start cells vary from hex to hex. They are chosen at random, and with more clues than positions a board is bound to repeat one — check the marker on every clue rather than inferring one from another.
- A white cell between two numbered hexes belongs to both answers. That is the crossing, and it is the constraint you solve with: one letter has to satisfy two clues at once. A cell on the outside edge of the figure touches only one black hex, so it belongs to a single answer.

How to Solve a Honeycomb: Five Steps
- Trace one ring before you write. Pick any hex, start at the cell its marker faces and touch the six cells in order, so your hand knows the path before your pencil does. On a dotted board this is also how you settle the direction: solve the clue you are surest of, place it, and the way it runs is the way every other answer runs.
- Start where the crossings are thickest. On a flower-shaped board a central hex touches six neighbours and a rim hex three or four; on a grid board the most any hex touches is four, and a corner touches two. Every neighbour is a letter someone else will confirm for you, so the crowded middle is where a correct guess pays off most and a wrong one is caught soonest.
- Write in pencil, and write the whole word. Six letters go in at once, and up to six of them are immediately checked against neighbouring clues. Half-entering an answer wastes the one advantage the shape gives you.
- Let a filled hex hand you its neighbours. Once a hex is complete, each adjacent clue already has a letter in place — and you know exactly where it sits in that word. Count the steps from the cell the neighbour’s own marker faces round to the shared cell: three steps means that letter is the fourth letter of the neighbour’s answer. A six-letter word with one fixed letter in a known position is a far smaller search than a blank one.
- Use the outside edge last. Rim cells belong to a single answer, so nothing corroborates them. Fill them from the clue once the interior letters have narrowed the word to one candidate.
Honeycomb Shapes and Sizes
The outline changes how the page looks, never how it solves: six letters around every numbered hex, whatever shape the board is. What the outline does change is how many letters two neighbours share.
- On flower and free-form boards — the rounded, petal-like outlines — each pair of neighbouring hexes shares exactly one cell.

Difficulty comes from the vocabulary rather than the geometry. An Easy board sticks to everyday six-letter words; Regular opens up the full vocabulary, still preferring the common words, so the answers get less predictable while the figure stays the same.
