Picture Mazes: Styling Basics

How to Style Your Picture Mazes for Clean, Professional Output

Overview

“I want my maze puzzles to look clean, readable, and professional—something I can actually publish or sell.”

In this tutorial, you’ll style your Picture Mazes so they look polished and easy to solve. You’ll control spacing, borders, background, and solution appearance so your puzzles work well for print, classrooms, or digital products.

By the end, you’ll have a consistent visual style you can reuse across all your puzzles.

Required Modules

Preparation

Before you begin:

  • Have a working Picture Maze setup (images and structure already configured)
  • Generate a preview so you can see styling changes clearly

Step-by-Step

Step 1: Set your puzzle background

Go to the Style tab and find Puzzle Background.

  • Choose a background color for your puzzle area
  • Or enable Transparent if you want no background

Use this to match your output:

  • White background → clean print layouts
  • Transparent → flexible for overlays or design work

Note: Puzzle Background is overwritten by the Cell Background for all cells that contain images.

Step 2: Adjust image padding for clarity

Set Image Padding to control spacing inside each cell.

  • Lower values → larger images, tighter layout
  • Higher values → more spacing, cleaner separation

Tip:

  • Keep padding moderate to avoid images touching or looking cramped

This directly affects how readable your maze feels.

Step 3: Choose your cell border style

In Cell Styling, select how cells are visually separated.

  • Open Cell Borders → classic maze look with openings
  • Closed Cell Borders → full grid boxes
  • No Cell Borders → minimal, image-focused layout

Then adjust the border line style (color and thickness).

Use cases:

  • Open borders → traditional maze feel
  • No borders → modern, clean aesthetic
  • Closed borders → structured worksheet style

Step 4: Control cell background and contrast

Set how the cells themselves appear behind your images.

  • Choose a cell fill color for contrast
  • Or enable Transparent to remove fill completely

Make sure:

  • Images remain clearly visible
  • There’s enough contrast between path and background

This is especially important for printing.

Step 5: Style the solution path

In the Solution section, choose how answers are displayed.

  • Select Dots → marks each correct cell
  • Select Line → draws a continuous path

Then adjust:

  • Start symbol style
  • Finish symbol style
  • Solution path line style

Tips:

  • Use bold, high-contrast colors for visibility
  • Keep solution styling consistent across your puzzles

Step 6: Save your style as a preset

Once your puzzle looks right:

  • Save your settings as a preset

This lets you:

  • Reuse the same visual style instantly
  • Keep all puzzles in a book or product consistent
  • Avoid redoing styling every time

Outcome

You now have a clean, readable, and professional Picture Maze style.

Your puzzles:

  • Are easier to solve and understand
  • Look consistent across pages or products
  • Are ready for print, classroom use, or digital publishing
